What is your most important specification when considering a rep?

Recommended Posts

VMSG

Reps are not perfect and when we buy a rep we always compromise one something. But some specifications are more important than others. For some it may be the font, for some it may be the color of the dial, the shape of the hands, etc.

If you had to choose one specification that you are not willing to compromise on, what it will be (only one)?

For me it is the case thickness, I can't see myself buy a 14mm rep of a 9.5mm gen. The first thing I check is the rep case thickness vs the gen.

Spelling. Both on dial and caseback.

Perhaps thickness at a distant second.

I'm not too fussed about bezels, rehaut, subdial spacing. But the 'feel' of the watch evaporates when there's a glaring spelling error.

Didn't even thought about it!

Spelling mistakes? this is still a thing? how unprofessional can the factory be to write with spelling mistakes?

Reliability and fixability of the movement. I don't buy watches that I can't find spares if something goes wrong.
Overall dimensions are important, globally or of some particular, like the size of the dial opening of a big date watch or the distance of the date window from the side of the dial.
Then I still have a rep Speedmaster which is all except perfect when it comes to subdial dimensions, but I still like it a lot ;)

What instead I really do not care are things like "gen like time adjustment" or ultra tiny details that can be visible only with a 10x loupe.

Bit different though - as I'm guessing his job isn't to replicate Chinese writing

Will it look good on me. That's all that matters - and eliminates many watches and then I work from there.

I'd wear a 14mm rep of a 9mm gen if it looked good on me.

Agree with 171796, function and reliability. A close second would be an good replica of the original watch.

Cyclops magnification is important to me. Looks like a toy if not done right.

I guess though each watch has its own personality and specific things that need to be right

I'll add, that it's not a Rolex, or an Omega, or a Breitling, or an AP or an IWC and everything else I did not mention. Eventually we're going to go there anyway.

The overall feel of the piece, movement and time keeping. Overall likeness to gen. That’s all for me. I’m not particular about small details. Most of my friends can’t tell anyway and I always sell the piece in less than 3 months
