DIY Boxing Glove Strap

Recommended Posts

Mr Stubbs

Spring is in the air. Time to trim the trees, dig the garden and clean out the garage.

Spring is also when your wife dusts off all your favorite stuff, and says 'Why do you still have this old shit?'  ;)

Case in point: I'm too old to enjoy getting punched in the face, but there must be something these would be good for... hmmm.  Wait a minute...

Picked this Pam 616  up from the 'gate to see if I would like it enough to go for a more expensive version.  I do like it, and I have the best rep on the way from Mr Time Zone. But I despise this rubber strap.

Let's go crazy!

IMG_3371.jpg

These were probably valuable, but hey, WATCH STRAP! :D

IMG_3369.jpg

No this isn't my nut sack ;) but look at that genuine distressing!

I laminated the boxing glove leather onto a 3mm thick medium-soft leather base, as the glove leather is only 1mm thick. I used LePages  rubber contact cement, wooden toothpicks as forms for the strap bars, and a sharp Olfa knife.  I cut the 3mm leather to 26mm tapered to 22mm, and matched the lengths to the existing rubber strap.

I pressed the leather pieces for thirty minutes to set. Then I trimmed them with the Olfa knife and notched the buckle section.

Here it is assembled again, but without any holes punched.

Out comes the hole punch which was probably my dad's from 1969.  I'll tell you straight up, this is NOT the best tool to punch through 4mm of leather. Damn skippy.

And here it is.

SUPER comfortable, made to fit, and  really spiffs up this $150 replica.

IMG_3399.jpg

So there you have it. Boxing gloves into a nice strap in less than two hours.  You can't even see the blood. :D

I'll get back to this later and add some off-white stitching to complement the lume. For a great guide to some real strap making, check out John G's stickied thread at the top of this sub-forum.

Thanks for looking! :coffee:

UPDATE:  Added the stitching.  It turned out great.

You have inspired me to clean out the sheds, find what good crap I have to make into something else.  Well done!  :thumbsup2:

Thanks guys!  Do you think the wife would mind if I turned our dresser into a watch display, lined with red  car-seat leather from the  garage?  :D

Doubt she'd even notice.  Send pictures when it's done.

Bet we'll be able to see the blood :D

This is awesome!

Ive collected some old leather belts, bags etc with the intent to do similar things.

As for the dresser, add a few diamonties on the missus side and she will be totally cool with it

very nice craftsmanship,  probably just as good as those expensive leather straps.
