Is This Dial Wonky?

Recommended Posts

semperfi55

Hi guys,

Just got my Breguet 5177. It's absolutely gorgeous!

But I'm having  a difficut time telling if the dial is wonky. I've tried lining up 3 and 9 o'clock with a ruler  to the crown and still have some suspicions.

Any help appreciated!

It looks like it's wonky to me - it's rotated half a degree clockwise to my eye. The 3 o'clock dot is two thirds of the way down the crown for eg. An easy fix for a watchsmith I'd have thought? It could just be the camera angle though, the photo's not quite head on by the look of it.

Is roman numeral 4 supposed to be IV, and why are a few of them upside down? unless that's just the style. On the plus side, the weave dial looks unique.

I don't know if rotating the whole dial would fix it though because that would move the date window. It looks like the metal ring bit that has the numerals and hour markers is fixed/glued onto the dial. So it's that ring that is off?

@EBBWriting IV as IIII is common on dials. Makes it look more balanced when you look at IIII and the opposite VIII.

They're not upside down, it's also a common dial design.

THIS

AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA

I have never seen, or maybe noticed, this before but it looks retarded to me haha

dial is easily fixed by just opening the back, loosening the movement screws and turning the whole a bit until it lines up better and tightening the screws again.

Yes but wouldn't that mess up the date window though?

nah, the whole movement is turned  this way. Its the same thing that smiths/modders do to align the 12 hour marker on a rolex to the crown on the rehaut.

Just need to see how far it can be turned without putting too much pressure on the crown stem

Ok point taken.

Went to give it a go but rather embarassingly I can't seem to open the caseback. VMSG encountered a similar problem on his Breguet. Friction ball did not work. No screws. No lip to allow for knife.

I'm gonna leave it for now and see what else I can do. For now it's just a watch with a somewhat wonky dial. Don't want to turn it into a scratched up watch with a somewhat wonky dial.

Just wear it ... You will be the only one that see the misalign dial (not wonky) ... If if bother you to the point that you can't wear it then at that point try to fix it.

It's a nice looking watch.

I even took off the leather straps in case there might be a lip around 12 or 6 o'clock

It's indeed common practice in the watch world to write IV as IIII. Take a look at Cartier dial with roman numerals.

Nothing that I couldn't live with, remember the JLC Reverso Auto dial ;)

I think it is a bit rotated, but it is not a big deal...

Regarding the roman numeric, it is written IIII also on the Gen dial:

Dial (whole movement) is rotated about 1 minute clockwise, and  that's a pressure fit case back.

That's because I haven't posted a review of it here.

Figure out what's wonky here ;)
