Are we more justified...

Recommended Posts

MOT

Hey folks, from the UK.

From what i see, the comparison of Rep to gen is now so small.  How can you justify buying a Gen?  History, brand. loyalty, quality, really???

Do you do the moral dance when deciding to buy?

What do you think..

Gen is gen

Rep is rep

Whether the quality of the rep is high doesn’t matter, as its not gen.

We collect reps for various reasons, all valid, but would you feel proud telling someone your rep is a gen?

Even if they take the bait, you feel like a loser inside.

Most of us would freely admit if we are wearing reps, I know I do.

Depends on what you mean by small

But if that's how you feel, more power to you, you'll be happier collecting! And less worrying about minute details that most people on the street would know nothing about.

A lot of it from brands are marketing hype but quality is definitely a thing. You get what you pay for.

Moral dance? At this point I would buy gen for only a few situations.

1) Vintage watch

2) Gifts for family

3) Gens that aren't repped well. Gen JLC Duoface with a moonphase will be sick.....

Hey Thommo,

I wasn't really talking about how we pass them off.

Its metal and art in the end.  Really worth the additional 4,6,8,10,15,20 THOUSAND POUNDS (Car/mortgage/kids expenses) etc....

Morally it falls clearly on the wrong side of the fence.

The difference is the price pure and simple. Some say they are testing the watches to see which they want as a gen - that's still a price issue as you could test the real deal if cost wasn't an issue.  Not saying many cannot and do not afford gens but the buying of replicas - the good, the bad and the ugly ........ well the price for the general superficial stolen design quality is impressive and tight arse attractive.

Lets not forget that although we sometimes knock the outrageous price difference those with half a brain know that 1. A lot more goes into the process of producing a genuine watch and all the after sales malarky ...... and 2. Without the genuine high value brands, the great designers, craftspeople, engineers,  watchsmiths et al wouldn't be producing the exceptional quality that we steal via our oriental fakers.

Oh and of course for those that really love mechanical watches nothing in the fake world comes close to whats inside a genuine high end piece.

I'm a bargain loving cheapskate with fuck all morals when it comes to the long tradition of faking luxury.

That said the only metaphorical dance I play out occasionally is simplifying the obsession by releasing all my fakes and buying a couple of gens. That thought rattles around quite often these days.

I’ve gone through about 45 reps and am on a sell off at the moment to buy all gens. Not because I have an issue with reps or anything, but because when I look at my Rolex it’s not actually a Rolex, but when I look at my Seiko, Bulova, Orient etc (which cost the same as a rep) then I’m looking at the real deal, and I like that.

There are plenty of Homage watches that do a  good job of copying the big brand models, and that’s another avenue I’m checking out.

I have no doubt I will buy some expensive gens at some point in the future and I will love wearing them, and if I ever need some $$$ i can sell them, sometimes even for a profit.

Quality isn’t the same from rep to gen, don’t believe me? Go get a good rep, then go into an AD and try on the gen. You can literally smell the difference. Gen smell.

We buy reps because we can’t afford gens, that’s fine and perfectly understandable.

Someone has to design those gens. Not necessarily the ridiculously high cost implied by gen prices but also not free. And that's for the designs that make the final cut, who knows how many designs don't make it but still incur wages for design attempts. That goes for aesthetics, mechanics, metallurgy, chemicals, hypoallergenic materials etc etc. Then there is actual manufacturing costs, QA, warranties both real and I implicit PLUS marketing, advertising, distribution......Maybe the main rep cost used to be manufacturing but now they are beginning to design movements as well although they still have a template to work from.  So.... NO, the reps aren't as close as they appear visually.  Rolex will fix your watch 40 years from now, which you can leave to your children or grandchildren.  Not so sure about Noob.  In other words, as Thommo said rather succinctly, gen is gen rep is rep.

We are here as a hobby and to interact with great people.

I enjoy the excitement from research to ordering to waiting on it arriving. “The chase”.

I also enjoy the pub like atmosphere we have.

Sometimes the actual watches are secondary haha.

I like steinhart but similar  regards to a rep, I would just look at it knowing it wasn’t the one I actually wanted. So I think I’ll avoid homages.

If anything I think the rep OCD helps you appreciate little things no one else notices when going gen!

My rep Omega says chronometer on the front and runs 10 secs a day fast.  I'm told that's bloody brilliant.

My Gen Breitling says chronometer on the front and was running 10 secs a day fast.  AD apologised and sent it back to Breitling to get it fixed.

I like the idea of building reps - selling to fund gen.  Thanks :D

Or, put a different watch on each day?

A man has to know his own tastes and have his priorities.  I like where your head's at.

I've always thought reps are kind of like fake tits.  They look great behind the facade of a cocktail dress and sexy lingerie.  But when presented the opportunity for direct inspection, it becomes quite clear there's no substitute for the real thing.
