But for £12200 (not including import duty), not £9600.

Only problem with buying abroad and smuggling (apart from getting caught) is that when you come to sell, you won't have a tax-paid certificate.   If you don't plan on selling to a dealer that isn't a problem.

Most AD's are now getting pretty picky about who buys any of the Rolex sport watches.  Couple of my local ones have "expression of interest" lists that they will only add you to if you have shopped with them before.  For the more sought after steel models (ceramic daytona/pepsi/etc) Rolex have asked the AD to give proof of other Rolex watches that the client has bought from them - the more you spend the higher up the list you'll go...

Pretty sure my friendly AD would blacklist me if I collected a Pepsi and then sold it for double retail.

On the less in demand models its a 25% deposit and a wait of  12-16 weeks...

Thats just bollocks. Good thing I have no interest in Rolex and now I've even more reason to dislike them

One wants to extremely overpay a kind of useless object whose real value is 1/8 of the asked price, and they treat you like if you're begging for food into a boutique?
They can go fuck off and all this pushes me stronger to the rep world :)

It is what it is - A lot of super high end stuff (cars/clothes/jewellery etc) is invite only - you don't just get to go and pick it off a shelf.

It would be great if they did!  It's not going to drop the prices - just more people would have one!

Not a dealers fault if the supplier wants further details on the purchaser.  My AD are super friendly, really helpful people.  They don't control the stock they receive and who it's released to.

It might also be Rolexs way of trying to restrict the grey market.  They have a great dealer network and I'm sure those dealers would lose some business if Rolex did what AP are doing and went to a boutique only set up.

Value and worth are very subjective things.

I wouldnt't stretch to call them high end. Patek, Lange, AP, thats high end. Rolex as far as I'm concerned are no different than Omegas or IWC and that level, they overinflate their "luxury" status. In fact I'd personally take an Omega or IWC over a Rolex any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Clever marketing and creating a sense of "must have"  amongst their customer base.

As much as I admire the brand and it's rich history, there's no way that I'd go on a waiting list or pay full retail for ANY of their current offerings.

Hermes and a handful of fancy brands have similar marketing strategy (buy big to get a spot on THEIR waiting list).

To all of them, I salute them with a collective FUCK YOU

+1.

Not towards the rep world, but other reasonably priced gens.

Seiko Presage is one such example.

Great watch for super rep money.

Sorry, I wasn’t listing Rolex as super high end in terms of horology.  They’re a perceived luxury brand with a massive following.

The good thing is the personal preference. I’m not a massive Omega fan.  AP are nice but then you’d be paying way over retail if you wanted to buy one of their desirable sports models, same with Patek... only a small collection of each brand is actually high end. The rest is just sold on the back of it.

Yes!

My brother went into the local AD to buy a batman as his now wife wanted to get it as his engagement present.

“Sorry sir, to go on our list you have to be a serious collector (AKA buying watches from them). “

Watch was openly available on the grey market.

If you can get it abroad for £3000k under retail, jump on a plane, plenty folk just bring back with box and papers in hand luggage.

So you know its a keeper.  Give it a year or two and let em calm down a bit.  Still hot aren't they.  Buy it nearly new or new abroad and do it all legit.  The cost of the duty etc is a small price to pay (with such a big outlay).  You want to enjoy the whole thing/experience, not worry too much about the money.  IMHO.  If you change your view down the line you would be great shape to pass it on.  Go to the states, have a holiday, wear it.  If they challenge you, pay it.  If not happy days.  You will feel better!

this!

Dont buy a gen rolex other than the vintage models. They are just not worth it at that price. Nothing on this planet can beat the Grand Seiko or the Seiko 5. Nothing!

Oh @GingerBlubba, I know you're better than this, @Logixa is right, a grand Seiko is the only high value gen worth getting. Be a strong independent watch nerd, not to be swayed by the sparkling turds of the Gen dealers. The best Rolex is the one that you 'borrow' from your dead boss, the next best is a fake one.
