Smiths PRS-29A Military

Recommended Posts

Slim

This arrived yesterday:

It's a re-edition of a military watch issued in the late '60s. I got it BNIB (and absolutely pristine) for £210; usually they cost £280 new, from timefactors.com. For that you get a nice two watch zip-up case, the watch on a grey NATO and two leather clip-on straps (it has fixed lug bars, in accordance with the original military spec).

The crystal is acrylic, with a lovely smooth curve down to the case at the edges.

It has a handwound, ETA2801-2 movement. The case, hands and matt dial are beautifully finished. Very solid and beautifully made.

Cheers!

It's on a leather NATO now, which I think does look the part a bit more than the grey one:

.. however the leather is not quite pliant enough to be folded over and pushed back through the top keeper, at least unobtrusively. I think I'm going to have to circumcise it.

Smiths went out of business a long time ago, but Timefactors (http://www.timefactors.com) bought the name and have been doing it proud. This one is a fairly faithful re-edition - minor differences of course, for example the L in the circle for Luminova rather than T for tritium.

Nice article about the two PRS29 models (there's a slightly bigger one with a sapphire crystal as well) here, with a bit of history: http://www.watcharoo.co.uk/smiths.htm

At less than £300 I think the 29A is brilliant value. Especially for me, because I really like minimal, simple watches with no date or complications.

I have nothing to do with Timefactors, by the way.
