How to question

Recommended Posts

ElvisFreak

so, today I just received a new seconds hand for a 6200.

I want to install it myself, I have installed hands before but not always successfully as they are so thin and flimsy ...

So guys, I ask what is the best homemade tool that would be best to take off the seconds hand?

I tried to change a second hand and snapped the pinion. Turns out it was me that was the tool. Recommend getting someone competent to do it.

There isnt a giid way to do that withiut a handpuller or two if those curved mini pry bars (dont know their real name).  Without watch tools, you're taking your chances

Hand pullers :P

Seriously tho, home made tools don't cut the mustard here; you will need a pair of hand pullers and a hand setter, real ones along with a dial protector. You will also need a case back tool and a few watchmaker's screwdrivers to remove the stem and the movement clamp screws.

I find hand removing levers make it fairly straightforward, but I guess it depends on how thin the hand is, how tight the fitting is etc.

The proper tool costs about $5 - but you could probably use nail clippers if you're dextrous.

Just make sure you do not clip off the pinion. ;)

Getting the hands off is an absolute doddle..... Never mastered the putting back on thing tho specially the seconds hand. On a 21j movement I always snap the pin clean off

“But you could probably use.....” is the phrase that pays

'Probably'.

It's hardly a ringing endorsement. If he'd asked me if he could perform a thoracotomy with a Biro, I would have said, "Definitely, if you're dextrous enough" because I know that's possible. Doesn't mean I'm recommending he does it. Jesus wept. Having said that, I bet he could do it with nail clippers. If he's dextrous enough.

I've always liked Gentle.

And I'm not a cockney. Cock perhaps.

Pickle, I reported you because you are a badmouthing cunt, not for "cheap tools suggestions".

What is a 6200?

By the way, I found out that FOR ME the best one to take out a single second hand (big, central, not the tiny ones of small seconds) is the bergeon tool for second hands: 30670.6, which is the white one in this pic:

H0780Group_cmyk1.jpg

You don't use it pushing on the dial but carefully fitting it between the second hand and the lower hands, closing it "enough to grab the tube but not to press it too much", and then pulling exactly vertically the hand.

It is the only tool that never failed also on 7750 central second hands which are real bitches to get out.

Like partially visible here at sec 19:

Anyway if the watch is a normal 3 hand non chronograph, better to use normal hand lever (sharpened) and take out all the 3 hands than to try grabbing only the second one.

I wouldn't use a nail clipper, too easy to damage the tube...
