Cleaning up my latest M2M purchase

Recommended Posts

GingerApple

So I saw that @mattcraiganon put a Rolex GMT on M2M. I've not got a modern Rolex GMT, but I'm desperate for a decent Batman when ARF get round to making it. I've never bothered with a black GMT as I thought it too similar to a Sub, but when I saw this one going cheaply, I thought I'd give it a bash. It was an old watch, a 2015 Noob according to the sales thread, so I knew it was battered and old, as seen from the sales pics.

Anyway, the sale went through in about twenty minutes and two days later (well done @mattcraiganon) here it is. I like it, but it's tired. The polished bracelet looks more or less the same as the brushed part, not reflective, shit loads of scratches, the bezel indices were old and dirty - it was a tired watch, as you'd expect for a 2015 piece.

I liked the watch a lot, but it was looking is age. So, I had a Cape Cod cloth sitting around unopened, I had my green kitchen scourer, I had my masking tape and I had my Molotow paint - let's try and freshen this bad boy up I thought!

So I got it taped up, gave it a polish and a brush, whizzed on the paint.....

I didn't do an amazing job, it's only my first ever attempt with the Cape Cod and the scourer/brushing (plus I rushed the Molotow paint job, so that's not my best work either), but all in all, it's taken years off the watch already. It's now the Cher of watches, Botoxed and sliced to within an inch of its life! Far from perfect, but the sparkle on the bezel indices is back, especially in low light, the distinction between the polished bracelet and the brushed area is a lot more obvious and, yeah, I'm pretty happy with it to be fair! You cheeky git, that's way nicer than how I gave it to you! No wonder you didn't want that refund for the winding ;p

Great job!

Nice job.  I have a polishing wheel.  Takes about a minute to get a mirror shine.  That cape cod stuff is too hard.

You have too much time on your hands Ginger

That looks like an entirely adequate improvement.
However are you sure it wasn't supposed to be a vintage model as sold. I get so confused between scratched to fuck and vintage.

It does take a bit of effort! Especially for an inherently lazy monkey such as my good self! I'll send it to you for polishing next time ;)

Cheers Rich.

To be fair, it probably only took 50 min from going to my cupboard and getting the Cape Cod etc ready to staying it back on the wrist. And it would be much quicker next time now I know what I'm doing. The fiddly bit is getting the masking tape to fit properly.

High praise indeed!!!!

Deffo not vintage, and it's way better like this. It's a funny hobby we have though, just last week I was using sandpaper and a nail file to put scratches on my brand new 6542, whereas today here I am buffing the scratches out. Madness!

That's a more than decent job you did there.

Pretty sure all that time alone without the missus improved your wrist power, Rich is a happily married man, so he needs to resort to powered tools !

I would have done it in 5 minutes

In defence of the French, they did win the American Revolutionary War for the colonists. It's not all cheese, surrender and minkeys.

Nice job Ginger.  Really nice.  :D The Cape Cod and painting work turned out amazingly nice.

@Rich I have a polishing wheel too, but it's for autobody work.

Well done!

20mins in the rock tumbler with sharp grit

vs

20mins in the rock tumbler with sharp grit and rubble added

(there was some talk of 'OK' sauce in times gone by, but that's probably just stretching credibility)
