Piloten 332 Posted March 8, 2019 So, I got a case made of brass. Just in case I didn't believe them, they put "solid brass" in wide, deep, engraved lettering right where the whole world can see it. Who can offer me some advice in getting rid of this without damaging the thin-ish material? Can't just polish it out, too deep. Grrrrr.
Glaude 1,615 Posted March 8, 2019 I would say if it's indeed solid brass, you could sand it away. Might be a bit too deep for just a polishing, but you could start away with that to see if that get you anywhere before sanding it with a more aggressive grit. Polishing will make it shine, and if it's not the style of the watch, you'll have to brush it anyway after that
Piloten 332 Posted March 8, 2019 Too thin to sand/abrade. Maybe a light brazing, if I can keep the heat down
Rx4Time 1,472 Posted March 8, 2019 are you sure it's SOLID BRASS ? If not then the heat might destroy any plating.
FoxWilde 155 Posted March 8, 2019 Fill in the engraving with brass and sand off the excess. Easy if you have the tools for it. heat brass wire and fill in the letters with a torch and some wire. One thing I should warn you is Brass comes in every shade of brass except the one you want. It'll feel smooth to the touch but you'll see the lettering by the different metals. They never come consistent in metal composition. It melts but it doesn't weld like steel. It's confusing. Hope this helps Fox
Piloten 332 Posted March 9, 2019 @Glaude @FoxWilde @Rx4Time Thanks guys, appreciated a great deal. Let you know how I get on. Sometimes a rustler would overbrand steers. Maybe something like that would work
TRANSPORTER 1 Posted March 10, 2019 Personally I’d leave it, what watch is it from??
Piloten 332 Posted March 13, 2019 Yeah, I never specified . . . It isn't actually a watch But the inscription is still annoying
