Is Quartz a No No

Recommended Posts

I have several decent Automatics, however I tend not to wear them all the time and setting them can be a pain. Is there a decent 'day to day' Quartz that someone  could recommend?

A day to day watch must be something resistant, so a sapphire crystal should be considered. There are not so many quartz with sapphire around crystal.

Give a look to the Dan Henry line. I have this one and I love it:

Now there is also this which adds 50m water resistance and is a complete one with even the alarm:

Tonnes of awesome quartz watches, rep and gen!

Many Cartier / Tag reps that are quartz in gen too.

Really depends on your style and budget (as there are quartz super reps too)

The one on the strap looks real nice.. I also recommend Tissot.

I joined the rep scene to come away from quartz - give me a manual / automatic any day of the week.

Regarding expensive quartz gens - they are a rip off when they are an empty box full off printed circuits and a £5 battery.

Just sayin'

This is the one quartz piece I have in my collection.  It's got the same Swiss Ronda movement as the genuine.

I like all watches and quartz is dead easy.  Here's what I have.  If I had to have one quartz watch it would be the Bulova Moonwatch.  Unbelievably nice microstepper.

Couple of modded Gate quartz speedies

Nothing wrong with quartz. I have a lovely Bulova and a couple of Seikos that are just dead easy to pick up in the morning without setting.

You're spoilt for choice really ....

You might also want to consider a Seiko Astron, they are incredibly advanced with solar power, satellite and GPS location, so you don’t even need to bother changing batteries nor setting the time. And most of the references available look really good too.

I just can't do quartz (except microstepper/smooth sweep versions). All of these watches look lovely in the pictures above, but as soon as I see the awful quartz tick in real life, it totally ruins it for me, I don't know why.

Interesting point of view. You could say the same about expensive automatic gens with standard ETA movements.... ;)

You could but more goes into making a genuine ETA and they are traditional which is where I'm coming from.

Some ETA quartz are extremely complex and have a lot of mechanical parts in addition to the quartz parts.

@deju example is one of the many examples of the brilliant quartz available ! Some JLC quartz are work of art !

But I'm like @DefinitelyNotGingerBubba, Can't stand the tick, so must be either no second hand or smooth sweep

Exactly the Standard Oysterquartz movement was basically an auto 3035 mech.

You're a ginger too?

I also totally prefer a sweeping second hand, but there are some really good quartz movements around. And I understand what the OP wants, something that you can just put on the wrist in the morning without having to think if you need to set the time and date.

As the above gentlemen I’m totally for automatic watches, but it doesn’t hurt to have some quartz lying around for when you need one.

Buy a GS Spring drive... that’s both and neither.

I would pay a lot of money to have a really nice Dead Seconds. Extra money to make an auto “tick” like a quartz...
