You mean if the 30min is functional ?

I don't get why they can't just use a thicker date wheel overlay to avoid the date being sunken, do you see an issue with that type of fix ?

Ohhh that's why ! 

Couldn't this whole assembly be done the other way around ? 

No datewheel in an ST19 ? (Would be manual, but that's a tradeoff I would be perfectly fine with !)

Nope, below those added gears you have A LOT of other parts mainly for day/date automatic or quick change and for the hour counter at 6, then below there is the mainplate, and going down you then have the main gear train wheels and bridge, then all the parts for the engagement and reset of the chrono and their chronograph bridge, and finally the autowind parts and its bridge. Then the rotor. A 7750 is made by A LOT of parts and layers :)

About the ST1901: there is even an automatic one around (ST1940), but there is no date on that movement :)
