Need Help - Bronzing submariner bezel ring on a Silix case

Recommended Posts

ClassicWhite

Hi all.

Im wanking on a Submariner Big Crown project - based on Silix case.

Just have drilled/tapped 8mm Athaya brevet crown, and was chuffed with what my man hands managed to achieve.

Thought I wanted to 'age' the case a bit, and tried to 'bronze' the bezel ring, and it turned f*king blue & purple as if its a 90's sports exhaust on a pimped out bike.

Have I not put enough bronze with the bronze brush? have I heated it up too high? not high enough?

I was always told by watch manufacturers 'blue'ing watch hands were difficult to achieve, looks like I did it by mistake.

Any advise would be appreciated;

The pics are after I have sanded down the outer coin edge so its not so obvious - inner bits of the coin edge is hard to sand down...

You kept it in the fire too long.  It can be removed and redone, but it looks pretty good the way you have it.  If it bothers you, a polisher will take that right back to shiny stainless.

To remove completely the oxidation just put the bezel (without the insert or anything else) inside a jar with hydrochloride acid. Few seconds only and it will go away.

Do not leave it inside for hours or it will eventually dissolve or erode.

I use 33% concentration acid for metallurgy /construction works. If it's the more common 5% it may require more time.

On Amazon it costs like 3£ a liter. Use it in glass or plastic only jar and in a ventilated room. And wear protective glasses for your eyes!

Make sure you’re using a 100% pure brass bristle brush, some are just brass colored aluminum.
In order to melt the brass onto the bezel ring, the ring must be glowing red hot.769a1b0aac642a10cfeccd1a9ad18f31.jpg
