So someone running a replica forum is going to spend $40K on a Cisco to prevent this, really? Why? I just talked to leaseweb.com on skype and they dont have any reports of a DDOS attack on their network. odd.. Said that they have massive amounts of tools to prevent such a thing and it's rare to last longer than 4-5 hours if it did happen as they would snuf it out quickly. Maybe they are confusing DDOS attack with a software glitch? dont know.. Yup - that's what I said, too... Would be interesting to know what actually happened, as this talk of DDoS and XT5650 doesn't really make a lot of sense. Still, whatever actually happened, I hope they get it sorted before too long. daytona4me 19 Posted July 5, 2009 I wanted to try and help the data center (I did not know the size,,if they were small, they might not be able to handle a ddos attack) Was going to ask them if they tried bash#netstat -lpn|grep :80 |awk '{print $5}'|sort , how many servers were hitting them try to block them, and if they could install Ingress and Egress Filtering at the Gateway. Also check to see if they allow sniffing cuz if they do they are asking for trouble. Obviously did not get this far with them from the looks of it, they should be able to blow my knowledge away with their own. oh well... tried to help.. hope they get it fixed soon. @greg_r Been very busy,, barely on RWI ... working 9-12 hours depending on the day, 4-8 on Saturday, had to take a week vacation just to do some stuff around the house,, play with the rug rats, etc.. so here I am,, trying to do some rounds to see everyone, in fact,, this is the only place I posted publicly as I am off to church here in a minute. Re: RG. that EuroVPS data centre they're using is massive - and highly respected. One of the best VPS providers in EU. I'm not sure whether they're working with them directly or through a re-seller, but either way, the required hardware and expertise should be on hand. greg_r 81 Posted July 5, 2009 Okay, I'll play. Well, if you saw Col's post over in the RG thread at RWG, you can probably draw your own conclusions. The whole DDoS scenario doesn't make much sense. At most, an attack of this sort will last 4-5 hours, not several days. It may stop for a while and then resume, but the mechanics of the situation make a continuous attack of this magnitude unlikely. In addition, the level of attack claimed would require an absolutely enormous botnet, which isn't something you can pick up at Best Buy... Another thing that strikes me as odd is that RG appear to be hosted at a large, highly respected NL-based datacentre who specialise in VPS hosting (this derived from freely-available info on the 'net). They will already have the necessary hardware to combat a DDoS attack (bear in mind that this is a company I've looked at closely as I've considered moving this board to them when and if we outgrow our current hosting arrangements). If that is the case, why are RG buying hardware from Cisco? Interesting to note that Cisco only make one DDoS-specific applicance and it costs well in excess of $40k. I've no idea what is going on, but some of the info we've heard so far doesn't really add up... Not really anybody's business other than RG's admins, though...
