Citizen Promaster JP2000-08E

Growing up in an Australian coastal town where my life revolved around, surfing, fishing and diving you can imagine my wonderment, when, on Saturday morning shopping trips I would gaze at the original Citizen C023 diver in the jewellers window. However it was a unicorn far beyond the finances of a teenage paper boy.

About twelve months ago I strapped on my chaps, starched my lasso and set about mustering such an object. Bidding is fierce on the originals and in reality they have all lived a previous life. Most were missing their dive tanks, papers and would need a minimum of a new crystal and bezel insert. Then there the aging internals and their propensity to chew through their three batteries in little time.

So it was back to the ranch to lick my wounds and devise a new strategy. Enter the remake JP2000.

The updated version is far more serviceable, from what I can gather internals are still available along with most cosmetic parts. Best of all its only got a single battery this time around.

Quality wise I'm impressed, the 60 click bezel is turns firmly and positively and lines up perfectly with the chapter ring as do the hands. The knurling on the crown and bezel ring is not outrageous but is really grippy and easy to use. The standout for me is the fluorescent hour hand, its super legible and reads at a glance. I only wish they'd done the hour hand aswell.

Size wise I remember the C023 being quite large, I did find a side by side comparison somewhere deep in the net and the JP did look a tad smaller. Quoted measurements vary and don't define whether they are case, bezel or including depth gauge. The only one I could confirm was it being slightly smaller lug to lug. Anyway a few definitive measurements on the JP.

Overall it's a comfortable watch and wears quite small with the depth gauge being on the left and usually tucking under the sleeve nicely. That is on a leather band however, the original rubber whilst being fit for its intended purpose is as stiff as a board and quite bulky, making it for me, quite out of proportion with the rest of the watch.

and on leather...

Theres a lot functions like the depth gauge, dive calendar, stopwatch etc but I'll leave it at that for now and end with a gratuitous lume shot, its not radioactive but shines bright and for a good amount of time. Cheers.

Ultra cool.  With just a hint of Proplof.  Love the accessory dive tank too.  :)

Yeah there was a bit of intrepidation  not being able to try one on first, but you're along time dead so fuck it, right? :D

For a bit of prospective here it is with something we can relate too.
