White hole effect??

Recommended Posts

So I have heard of the “black hole effect” on the cyclops of Rolex sub reps.

Is what I’m seeing below basically a “white hole effect”?!

Asking for a friend.....

Are you guys drunk?

The black hole is caused by the way the anti reflective coatings applied.

while the same effect is on a white dial it’s not as pronounced imho because the dials pretty bright as it is, here is a picture showing the black hole effect on a white dial

And it’s harder to see this on the white, out of all my pics this is the only decent example

Yes that’s it, it’s basically when you get a certain angle, the reflection in the cyclops is not like the main crystal face so it looks deeper ( but it’s technically clearer). A lot easier to see on a black dial

I wouldn't say so, no. That doesn't look very black holey to me, the reflection seems the same on the crystal and cyclops. It just looks like a normal Rep crystal without any discernable black hole (or white) to my eyes. Are you sure it's a Gen/Prof/etc crystal?

Ain't got a clue to be honest. Fairly certain it's just a bog standard rep.

I just brought up the topic, because people are always going on about this "effect", posting photos, etc, but I can't ever really see any difference?! I must be stupid....

Shit reps look milky in the cyclops, Gen has a clearer black hole.

Just as deju said, the black hole 'effect' is a coating so you can see the date more clearly even in the sunlight (similar the usual AR coating on crystals).

Pretty sure your 'white hole' pics are just due to the angle of the picture and it magnifying part of the white dial - just like at a pool.

Oh ok, well my Exporer 2 definitely has AR on the cyclops, so happy days I guess.

More importantly, while on the topic of holes.

Does a straw have one hole or two holes?

Yup it’s still a black hole effect, just harder to see it on a white dial
