It would be nice to be able to hide Section 8 and Gulag Sections from showing up...

Even though I've enjoyed participating and reading these two sections, it's gotten to the point where there's just too much silliness being posted. The reason I really enjoy this forum is that people are allowed to be candid, with splashes of color that's rarely found or accepted on other forums. Now it seems more like a reform school bathroom than a watch forum. I don't have a problem with the people, I just wish there was an option for some of us to be able to block those areas of the forum from showing up. I look at those who are trying to do some great things like Ska and I can't help but wonder why he would want to use this forum as a place to share his work? I certainly wouldn't want to direct friends and others to this site to follow the development of a great watch project.

Just a thought.

The short response from me is...I agree in part.

I agree that Section 8 would be best in the VIP Section.

That way the casual or one time visitor isn't exposed to it.

The risk of children or members with delicate sensibilities would be diminished.

I think this is safer for all of us...JMO

The gulag is an outlet and I would leave it as it is.

Regardless of anything I think. I am happy with whatever Adm chooses.

For me it is simple.

For them, it is more complicated.

It would indeed however with the current software there is no way to prevent them showing in the topic list, we are looking at it mate.

Agree, I would leave the "ignore section" unchecked - but having the option is good

Also agreed, but no way to do it with the current software, sadly.

There's always RG or the Ladies Knitting Circle if you're unhappy here............................. but I think you'd die of boredom :johng: The whole point is it is the silliness that marks RWG out from the others and no-one forces you to read any thread so I don't see what the issue is. Porn is limited to Section 8 so the main threads are work friendly. You are totally at liberty to ignore any threads from there or the Gulag. Personally I find quite a lot of stuff here either distasteful or irritating but I just ignore those threads, I don't complain to Admin and I don't try to force others to my view. Similarly I don't like Pams and have little interest in them so I don't go to the Pam section even if it shows up in recent posts.

Given that TB named me in the OP here's my 2cents.

I love section 8. Or at least what Section 8 used to be and personally I don't think we need to be thinking about adding "Ignore" buttons or anything down that route.

What I think does need to happen is that the main contributors to Sec8 need to take a good hard look at why it has recently been getting so much negative attention.

There's a reason why its been a perfectly functional depository of boobs, flaming and sick, unmitigated filth since 2008 with little to no staff intervention, yet its only in the past few months that the mods have had to step in more and more frequently and its got nothing to do with our membership increasing.

The difference is that there are now a minority of members who do little else but constantly post near-identical threads full of near-identical tits, ass and pussy with ever increasing frequency.

The abundance of these posts lately, means they are constantly plastered all over the latest threads box and most of the 1st page of recent topics.

Now I love boobs, I love ass and I really love pussy. Section 8 always delivered (thanks onzey) and it was great that every now and then I'd log on and be presented with a selection of new breasts I'd never had the pleasure of looking at before.

But this is after all a watch forum, thats why MOST of us are here and as a result the balance was always very much weighted in favour of watch-related stuff.

Not so anymore though and this I think is a fundamental problem. Because not only is it changing the atmosphere of the place to the point where sometimes it doesn't even feel like a watch board, let alone the RWG I've come to know and love, but ironically because admin are getting more and more complaints from people who don't want to have to trawl through reams of almost indistinguishable posts with titles that all roughly equate to "Which-of-these-would-you-rather-wank-over-because-you're-too-lazy-to-even-type-youporn-into-your-browser?" in order to find a paragraph somewhere about watches, the section 8 I love is actually becoming more and more limited and restricted.

Basically its BORING.

FFS we're so unused to watch discussion now that even Baldrick got blasted yesterday for daring to post pics of some fantasy reps.

The secondary issue is that along with everything described above, Section 8 although broadly (and proudly) offensive just about all the time, never (to my knowledge) contained any material which was intended to be directly abusive or discriminatory towards individuals, groups, ethnic minorities, or anyone who couldn't defend themselves with the same vigour.

The "Ethnic Jokes" (That's BNP slang for Racist by the way kids) thread and others like the lamentable Prison Hottie thread etc. do just that, and they not only leave a bitter taste morally but also have the potential to do considerable harm to the reputation of the board, and those members who entertain them.

The freedom to post as we can do in section 8, on internet fora is rarer than any rep you could wish for, and as such it comes with a modicum of responsibility.

Agree with everything Ska said, and most of what BL said, alarmingly!

Silliness is good.

Boobies, if that is what you want is also fine.

Ignoring the stuff that irritates you is the right approach.

Sec8 was SUPPOSED to be fun - not a trash can (which is what it's gradually turning into).

What I'm having a problem with is the unpleasantness that is creeping into altogether too many threads lately. We all love a good argument and traditionally they've been a lot of fun here, but they've been getting downright nasty recently - and that is what kills online communities (I speak from bitter and extensive personal experience).

We've all worked too hard making this place the way it is to risk losing it through recrimination and general nastiness.

Looking like a pack of wee kids having a pissing competition in the sand pit, if you ask me.

Hey...I'm all for immaturity.........One of the main reasons I come in here.

I come in here also, to get away from exactly what's going on in sec 8 now.

How old are people here? Pack it up.... I love this board....the community of this place.

When the chips are down, most people here will help another out, or groups band together to support members having a rough time.....We all seem to like watches.......and boobies and cars and all things that make us blokes.

Great....something in common.

These threads are pointless. Reading them is little more than validating the kind of behaviour that I deal with outside this place.

So I won't read it....no problem.

The problem is that now it spills over to other threads. It escalates. It begins to dominate the board......enough with the manufactured shitstorms!...Go have a beer, or agree to silently hate each other!

This is a less regulated board...enjoy that...but don't test it to breaking point. Once you go there, I don't think you can come back, and the mods and admin will be forced to make this place more like the knitting club.

We're over 11k members now. Small communities work well with less regulation.

We're no longer a small community.

So...how about it guys?

Take a valium, and a few beers and stow it. The whole thing, regardless of who

(Pick a time and insert names here) is on the nose.

Give it a rest.

5 straight nights of partying until 4am....the neighbours are getting pissed off.

Adding to watch Ska said, I have been disappointed with the lack of posts in other sections that are not labeled Section 8 or Gulag. Since I am new here, I am hungry for posts about watches and reps, but lately when I check the board, there seem to be fewer and fewer posts in the General Discussion and more and more in the section 8 or Gulag sections.

Now I am too new here to even try and suggest a change, but I have found myself browsing other watch sites more than normal to get my daily fix of info and watch pictures.

Always going to be a difficult call. I have posted at length on this issue broadlyalong theblines of what Greg said. Agree with Ska that whilst controversial, the off-topic threads were interesting and thought provoking.. Maybe this will sort itself out over time! The Controversial Thread initiative is new after all.

I still have yet to hear one good reason that people can't just CHOOSE not to fucking read those threads.

If you want to read watch threads, go to GD. I just posted one today. And yet, believe it or not, from the very people who complain about the trash threads, they have posted more in THOSE threads today than in my watch thread.

I have never said all of those threads have value. But I will defend till the day I die the right of people to post them. It is EASY to defend the right when you agree with what has been posted. But the real test of one's commitment to this freedom we enjoy here is whether you will defend the threads you DON'T like. Because if you really value the freedom, then you have to recognize and even welcome the existence of ideas and conduct that may personally offend you.

And I will never stop suggesting, no matter how much others don't want to hear it, that they exercise some fucking common sense and just don't read threads that offend them. This is SO OBVIOUS that I still can't understand why we are discussing it. There are OTHER forums that have strict rules about this stuff, you won't have to ever see it, I think that is great, there are a variety of forums to suit ALL tastes.

People continue to mention the recent topics box. Greg has told me that the next upgraded version of the forum software may give us the ability to remove, for example, section 8 threads, from the box. But in the meantime, people should remember that the old forum, and this one for a long time, didn't have any recent topics box. It was created as a convenience, not a replacement for your brain. If you want to read watch threads, I suggest opening "General Discussion". There are a lot of them in there, and even on the best days, they don't all show up in the recent topics box.

In the final analysis, censorship is censorship, whether you prohibit certain speech or whether you intimidate and pressure others into accepting YOUR code of behaviour. There is no difference, it is the suppresion of conduct you don't approve. And that is what is really goinog on here. Even if you could remove the Section 8 threads from the recent topics box, people would continue to complain. Because they would want to view section 8, but only with the content THEY approved of.

Small communities work well with less regulation.

We're no longer a small community.

ergo, we don't work well with less regulation?

Or.... we could just let the place reach an equilibrium, with less law, it will not grow as much, some will leave. I say, so be it. You cannot satisfy EVERYONE, but there ARE boards for EVERYONE. No one board will ever do that. How about not trying to repress this one until it satisfies those that can already get a calm environment somewhere else?

I might add, the OP posted a fantastic watch thread at RG today, but all we got here from him was a complaint about what shows up in the recent topics box.
