Tropical Experiment

Recommended Posts

Added a Tudor 7928 dial on a whim from raffles, so cheap! Have a few broken dg2813s lying around and a spare case.

If you have seen how laughable the dial is, you know something needs to be done, so I went to town with paint brush, which turned into a rabbit hole of experiments and ended up with a "tropical ish thing"

Pics of what it looked like new, after some painting, baking, vinegar bath and lacquer.

What do you think? fb5cdc435a4285368ca9b044e6a71de9.jpg71de7210c0b5bf6a11374292b919d7c1.jpg323a86ca9b644401b654446c346934e6.jpg

Looks better, if the laying in the sun for several decades is what you are going for.

I think that looks good and will make a nice heavy vintage.

I played with that dial too recently.  Not quite as extreme though.

Its a fun dial and cheap enough to experiment on.  I think I'll put mine in something like this eventually, yours would really look good in this.

Thanks NcRich. All I know about modding is from your tutorials. Yours looks great as usual. What lume kit do you use?

This is just the acrylic Watchlume stuff off eBay. It's cheap and easy to tint since its water based. What are you using?

That is a 2813 that came out of a watch I got in trade and took apart. The canon pinions seem awfully high. Regular hands.

Same stuff. I'm like you all about the budget builds until I get better. Besides, the Viet stuff doesn't have enough room to be creative.

On the topic of lume, mine comes out glossy and rubbery, too much binder?

That's what I see as well, looks like a nice h4 eta setup like TC v6. Nice one!

What does the vinegar bath do to the dial?

It looks good! I’m gonna use yours as a reference pic for my own project.

Thanks man! As context, I was fed up with the pain drying into this powdery matte finish and it was 1 am. Had the hands aging in a salt vinegar bath.

Out of frustration and laziness, I didn't wanna rinse off with water so I dipped the dial into the vinegar bath for like 5 minutes.

When sanity kicked in, I picked up and let it dry, It started to develop some crystalization with salt grains texture. Then I dipped it into water. Upon drying, it started to develop a tropical look, guess it was the paint, salt and water sequence.

This morning I baked it and put some lacquer to seal the look. Although wish it was more uniform.

Thanks for the detailed explanation :thumbsup2:

Given my third build ever, I say not bad for a day's work. Thoughts? 8a00d471fd86bc7a19c8c0308eca3297.jpgc7836fcf606a93aa4505bfc29cb912c7.jpg

Lume, heat oven to 200f, put dial in and turn oven off. Sometimes I do it a couple times. I can actually shape the Lume a little with a nail file once hardened. You can then matte spray and repeat the 200f treatment .

Have in the past, will try to recall my steps here and write one up. Needless to say, I'm gonna order more dials and experiment properly, like back in college days properly.

Really great work here. It's an accomplishment just to finish one of these, even better when it turns out the way you wanted it to. Looks great.
