Yet another JKF 1680 Red Sub build

Recommended Posts

Mbari

I built the first watch ever in June of 2020 and since then it's been a bug as some of you know and can relate to.

While I enjoy and have a few Viet hybrid builds but as a hobbyist, I gotta watch my expenses.

This one is a left over homologation build with mostly all JKF parts sans case. Idk where the case is from, I just had to add changers and slim the CGs.

Dial is from one of my first builds. Aged and relumed

Datewheel aged to give it a more weatherred look.

Hands from TConcepts aged and relumed.

Bezel insert from watchman on ebay, aged to give it a blue hue.

Bezel aged to match the watch overall

Keep long great time on a low beat DG. Some of the DG movements are just so darn accurate and moves when you pick it up right away.

The datewheel snaps quickly, centered and into place like a revolver chamber. Love it! And for sure the aged wheel is my favorite party trick of the watch.

Hope y'all enjoy.

P.s. pics taken with my pixel phone and a home made shoe box, paper towel, shop light contraption... Budget concious suburban dad mentality :-|

I always look forward to your vintage posts, some awesome builds.  I had no idea you'd only been doing them for a year, they like spectacular.  And I can't wait to see some future builds, you're only going to get better!

Thanks man. Sadly I think I'm running into some hardware challenges. Lathe, namely.

Fabulous, going for a build myself

i used a dremel alot of hand polish with sandpaper and a jkf 1680 case. Going to order a fitting eta and a gen dial and hands when the budget is right

Anyone knows How to Age the bezel to that blue tone? I tried a toilet cleaner and it ended up white gray, i tried a less strong acid and it faded just as quickly.. never got a blue tone

Fantastic work on the case mate!

For blue fade, it all depends on the source of the insert. Slay kissing40 insert or watchman408 (ebay) black inserts are the only two that I know of goes blueish.

To get there, use heavy industrial bleach and water (50/50) to remove top coat.

Rinse in warm water.

Insert it back to a more diluted mix for round 2. But keep an eye on it. I'd say with sun light exposure keep it for 3 to 5 mins. And you will see a bit of blue hues come through.

Take it out, rinse again and dry it thoroughly. Do not touch it without thorough drying. Or it will east into the enamel and then you are left with a grey faded insert.

Once dried, use tweezer to pick up the insert and roast it on open fire, trust me! Just like toasting Marshmellows. This darkens the blue a bit and also acts as coating. Because when you put your finishing touch, I use old capecod to avoid over brushing and taking too much color off.

And voila!
