Going gen: Rolex Ex II real or fake?

Recommended Posts

GoW13

Hi guys,

i want to go gen again and this time it should be a Rolex Explorer 2 from 1995 in a full set. But this forum made me very aware, that there are very good fakes of this watch and also box and papers can be faked easily. So I hope, that this forum could help me identify if this watch is worth the money (7.750€) or not :)

Ermm  95 with drilled lugs and hobnail clasp = good ?

Bad - weird  lugholes/pins and over polished, touched up bezel paint.

Id be popping the hood on that.

IIRC the movement is the older revision.

Red flags everywhere on this. Even if was somehow legit, the unsympathetic refurb job is seriously tacky in my view..

The box feels try hard patina,  vs my hard life 92 box it seems age worn but not damaged. Like what they do to the seams of fake sneaker boxes

Either way, when you are considering dropping this amount of money on a watch, you need to get it professionally validated if it is not coming from a reputable dealer.

The grime in the bracelet looks pretty authentic!

Is asking the question expressing enough doubt to give it the elbow?

Thanks everyone for chiming in! Going for an older watch is always tough for me to decide wether it’s good value or not… Especially with Rolex and all the details (polish, crown guard, bracelet,…) to look for :/

But I guess I’ll pass on it and wait for a better opportunity for an Explorer. Thanks again and maybe I’ll get back to you all for more help on another piece ;)

@GoW13 specifically take your time, I let maybe 2-3 go before getting mine.

Good news the jump in hype pricing has gone down for this model.

I’d personally not need as polished as this, mine is to be worn.

definitely ask for a movement shot!

Polished always looks nicer/better condition vs worn. But I know, that a lot of substance of the watch can be lost as well and an unpolished watch would be preferred.

Movement shot is also a good point! With the next one I have my eye on, I’ll immediately ask for one. I guess that would be the safest method to identify a rep..

Should have a T 25 dial and should be tritium. It looks like the dial has been swapped out. I’ve had mine for years just doesn’t look right this one I’m afraid.

Amazing resource we have on this forum. I have made mistakes on gens a couple of times and without mates on here I would have made a few more.

Also have picked up some amazing deals through being patient and waiting for the right piece

Looks real to me but there’s also the risk of unknowingly buying a franken. For any Rolex, I’d go to an AD and buy new. I know you’ll wait a while but there’s zero risk and you never lose money.

Damn right you’ll wait a while, they don’t make the 16570 any more so that’s a long waitlist.

Haha yeah I mean I’d just buy a new one. It hasn’t really changed.
