rsea 0 Posted July 10, 2011 I don't normally post builds I do for members but this one has blown my mind The member gave me a pic of what he wanted and I built it from there. I didn't think much of the Gen pic but holy cow I like it in the flesh!! I already have plans to make another for myself lol Enjoy the pics

Member X 91 Posted July 10, 2011 Nice cracked lume, nice soldering, great dial finish... Love it! Is that an Athaya bezel? What plexi is it??
greg_r 81 Posted July 11, 2011 Beautiful! That's my idea of vintage. Showing small signs of age but basically still in nice condition. Very very well judged....
rsea 0 Posted July 11, 2011 Memberx - It's a NW bezel. I've got some of athaya's here and they don't have the recess for the gasket so I don't use them. Plexi is a low dome sternkreuz from Cousins
wolfwood 4 Posted July 11, 2011 (edited) Hi, I like vintagized watches and even have a vin U-Boat coming and a vin Rolex sub. What I can't figure out is for mordern watches like this and the U-Boat, what do you say when other asked you about your watch? Edited July 11, 2011 by wolfwood
rsea 0 Posted July 11, 2011 I don't know about everyone else but if someone is stupid enough to ask me about watches I just start talking and generally don't stop until an hour or two later :-) During the course of the convo I let them know I've always admired WWII military watches but they're almost unobtainable now so I built a reproduction. They appreciate the details, the accuracy and the history of the piece. I've never tried to pass one off as Gen and never will because it'd be ridiculous to try and completely unnecessary

Plexi is a low dome sternkreuz from Cousins Yeah, it is a shame that Athaya's don't have that - I'm going to have to sort out some epoxy or silicon sealant stuff to make sure mine are waterproof between the bezel and the case, and some UV glue for the plexi to bezel seal, when I get them built! Thanks for the info on the plexi, though, just typical that I've just done a massive order at cousins so will have to pay postage again... lol
dingle 57 Posted July 11, 2011 super awesome mate. I can only hope mine comes close. just curious, what is the price for one completely done?
Member X 91 Posted July 11, 2011 A lot depends on what parts you use, I think. Mine are coming out something like this... 3646 case (Silix) - $60ish Athaya High Bezel - $35 (a NW bezel is more) Plexi - $? (to order) NW solid caseback - $60ish Movement - $40+, depending on what you use Hands - $10-50ish, depending on what you use Dial - $15-150, depending on what you use Then there's paint/lume/solder/strap/buckle... I don't think any of mine will come in under $200! lol I need to do a spreadsheet for my builds but I'm scared of what I will have spent...

Mine will not have a high bezel or thick caseback at this time. That would run another $85.00 or so.... A lot more than I expected to pay giving I was building it myself. ...... LOL Yep - they do start to add up once you start straying from the standard Silix build! You could buy a silix 3646/6497-based watch and then just age the dial and hands - that would only be $110+shipping IIRC, + getting it aged + any tools, but we do want these unique custom builds so have to spend the money on parts... Look at it this way, though - you gain the experience and skills from it so you can transfer those to other watches and save some money there, and it still works out cheaper than a full NW build :P lol (Although I do still want a NW gen-construction build... ))
rsea 0 Posted July 11, 2011 It definitely adds up but you don't have to spend huge $ if you're prepared to use a 6497 movement. Most of my stuff goes out between 300-600 with the only exceptions being the Cortebert and Hamilton pocket watch conversions which can get expensive. The trap every vintage newb falls into is the pocket watch movements. They see they can get a Cortebert 616 on ebay for $300 and dive in They forget Service $80 NW Display case back $140 Movement Ring $40 Hands sized for Cortebert 20-50 Stem $50+ if you can get one So before they know it they've spent $600 and that's a scary start
