Alan32 1,593 Posted November 4, 2024 In 1984 ,before I became a horoloholic, I bought my first watch a Seiko 7A38-7180 , the first 1/10 of a second chronograph, in Black and gold. Through the years the coating rubbed off and the watch stopped working ,I put it in a drawer and forgot about it. Several years later I became addicted.......sorry , started to collect watches , but alas my first was lost forever. These watches rarely appear and are usually in terible condition. I was perusing "Birth year watches" and found this one in pristine condition. It's an odd feeling to have forty year old watch that is "Brand New" and identical to my first.
whiskypete 2 Posted February 25 Great idea. I blew most of my wages on a Seiko 5 7009 white dial auto when I started work in 1984. I could never find a replacement bracelet for it when it broke back in the day. I think now I will try and hunt the whole watch down again - it cost me £40 - wonder how much it will be now? Looks like you're in luck there are quite a few around . Mine cost me £399....for a watch I will mainly look at and hardly wear..... man I've got it bad. whiskypete 2 Posted February 25 Many thanks Alan. Mine's 'only' doubled in price, plus a bit more.. I will get one - only thing is, I didn't have 8" wrists back in 1984 - may need bracelet extenders!!
watchnut 407 Posted February 25 I had the exact same watch but bought it second hand many years ago with very nearly all the coating removed, which didnt look bad to be fair, so its nice to see one in new condition. Enjoy.
vertmontre 3 Posted March 20 (edited) What a beautiful story! Finding a watch identical to its very first, especially in perfect condition, is almost a journey back in time. The 7A38-7180 is a real piece of watchmaking history, and in black and gold, it still has as much charm. Take advantage of this horological resurrection !
