New Build Advice

Recommended Posts

Howdy All,

New guy here.  I've been a quiet reader here for quite some time, but I think I'm ready for my first build.   I'm interested in building either a 1680 or 11660.  What's the generally considered best way to go about it?

  • Get one from Trusty and then modify, or
  • Start from parts

If I get one from Trusty (or elsewhere) and modify that, what are the first parts to mod?  Looking at other folks' mods here, it'd be the case, I suspect.  What else?

This is my first build, so I don't want to get crazy with super-high end  or gen parts.

Thanks in advance!

Careful, it's a slippery slope.

It starts small with a JKF complete watch that you rework the case on. Then you start looking at better dials. Soon you're sourcing cases and dials from Vietnam. Next thing you know you've spent the last 3 or 4 years scouring the forums for parts and still haven't built the watch even though you have most of the parts you need. You rarely respond to posts but check the M2M section a few times a week. Then one day ask a question, just like this one, and you realize you've gone too far trying to build your dream watch and should have just bought one from one of the builders on the forum.

Here is some reading.

Personally I would get my watches from Marvellous Replica. Unless you like paying more for worse service.

The links for recommended tools don't seem to work -- any advice about tools?  Amazon is probably a better source than Ali these days...

Ali or Amazon, it’s the same stuff, Amazon is quicker and more expensive, you’re just paying for someone else to import it and ship it to you with profit.

Let’s use a bit of common sense here… EVERYTHING is made in China these days
