Contacted JOA for a Fiddy homage

JOA,

I got your contact info from a friend at Watchuseek. I am interested in a custom Panerai homage. Specifically, I am looking for a "Fiddy" destro - 1950 case, destro, 1950-style crown and crown-guard, sterile dial (no tick marks either) with numbers blacked out (only hands lumed), sapphire crystal, Asian 6497. Case and crown guard brushed, bezel polished.

That is basically it - can you give me an idea what that would run me? And if you have some sort of price list for more standard homages, please send it to me. I have a source for straps, but if you offer good straps, please send me info on them as well.

And can you also give me a price with AND without a movement? Getatwatch Co. has a PVD 6497 that is very cool. If you want to see it, it can be found here, under "movements": http://www.siswatch727.com/index.do If I decide I want that movement, perhaps I can have it sent to you and you install it for me.... if there is extra charge, please include in price....

Here is a reference pic of a homage Radiomir - I would liked the numbers blacked out like on this one:

Thanks!!!

REPLY:

$395 and you supply the movement.

His work is very highly esteemed on gen forums - but seems like a lot to me - probably will get one from Getat and mod my own dial, do a nice cg, etc....

it is quite a bit, something I wouldn't personally spend but you get what you pay for (usually) - you can do it yourself and save a bundle but... you get what you pay for ;) at least until you get good

I'd like to see you get into that shit - I'd be interested to see how it turns out - the cheapies will be great guinea pigs - I can't think of a better man to blaze the trails

Yeah, that's a lot of scratch for a homage - but custom building is going to cost. Personally, I'd be inclined to do as you suggest, buy the bits from getat and mod it myself - 6497s are very easy to work with...

a bottle of lume is like $10 - not sure about quality but apparently it's good

http://glowinc.com/detail.aspx?ID=41

There is a comparison somewhere, RWI or RWG2 with pics compeing Glowinc to C3. shows which ones match which. The qualityhis just as good and much cheaper. You will want the finest grade they stock.

They have a product called glow sand as well. If you own a router you can make some real nice house numbers/signs out of a chunk of hardwood.

nice idea - I actually ordered a bottle ($10.50) of their finest - I suspected it would be crap so this insight is motivating

Yeah, on RG I saw the comparison Col is talking about - someone said, "that stuff is shit, there is a reason Ziggy uses the expensive stuff" - guy was being a total cocksucker. Then someone went and ASKED Ziggy - he said, "I uses the expensive stuff because I bought a whole bunch and have to use it up - otherwise I would use glowinc..."

It seems the stuff is really great - bright, comes in all the different grain sizes, and CHEAP.

thanks Col - some more good info

I especially like these pics from takashi

if you notice, there is a quality difference between C3 and Ultra Green v10, the C3 has a better shade to it but not as bright

also, the c3 lights on color is whiter

considering the price and difference.... plus the type of watches we experimenting with.... it's a no brainer

I am not sure... depends on the quality of the work. Sapphire, top notch cg/cg pin/crown, good case, customized dial (I asked for a stealth dial), excellently finished case.... if it has all those things, maybe it is worth it. Look at LH's watches - that can't ALL be dial and movement....

Look at this thing:
