GENEVE ASTRAL Quarter Repeater

Recommended Posts

Snapshot_2011_10_04_10_45_58.png

Thing came up for sale about a month ago and when I called he already had sold it. Seems the deal must have fallen through.

So should I strike? How much?

It looks good to me but I have no idea how much a piece like this is worth. I do how ever like the simple design and I like the idea of owning a pocket watch.

I don't know that specific watch, so my comments are more generalised.(It may be very rare)

Don't get too carried away with prices, these PW's are more plentiful than you would think.

A watchmaker friend of mine has a collector who brings him 100+ /month to scavenge and build maybe 30 - 40 good ones.

Good working from the 1800's will sell from $200 -$500 depending on final finish and brand/model.

Of course there are exceptions, and this could be one, don't know of that brand/model.

Some serious research needed methinks.

Are you saying Geneve, as in Rx Geneve? Or just Geneve? Is it solid gold BTW?

Photos of movement?

Pretty sure it's a 18K gold VC case. Now dial may be original (or not). Movement is quarter repeater, however I have no pics (suspect owner wouldn't know how to open, and I am now 6000 miles away).

Tough one, this ...

Well a quickie search gives me-

http://antiqwatch.com/all/geneve-pocket-watch.html

but I can't tie Astral into that.

I did see Astral movement in some Smiths PW.

Also the VC reference.

Still lost a bit.

C'mon - fess up!

I believe we're looking at a VC quarter repeater, where the dial may have been replaced. And where seller have confused "Geneve Astral" with the trademark.

You may find that the scrap value of the case is more than the watch.

I saw a Geneve (brand) solid gold 18k wristwatch recently and it had a solid 14k bracelet. When we stripped the glass and movement out we still had $4500 in scrap value.

The owner only wanted $200 above scrap for it, yet couldn't find a taker. the watch was, in fairness, a bit "used"! It was going to take a good bit of restoring.

Seems like you need someone local you can trust to get more info.

This will be the key here I believe. Unless seller is just looking at scrap...

Still, need a pic of the movement to see if it might be worth pursuing further

Well, given the fellows abilities with the camera, opening the back might have him rip that lid right off.

Anyway, will make the request. Might even see if I could get him to do a movie to get the sound.

Astral was a trade mark registered by Vacheron & Constantin on the 22 February 1895.

From antiquorum

the older trademark “Astral” (registered in 1895, No. 7312) was employed for table clock movements.
;)Antiquorum

From the hourlounge

This would be the complete list of their self-proclaimed "second quality" watches:

Girod-Colombey (1819)

Vacheron & Cie (1819)

Freres Desart (1819)

Isaac Soret (1820)

Abraham Vacheron Girod (1822)

*Horseshoes symbol (1883)

*Trident symbol (1884)

Astral (1895)

Trident (1902)

It's a damn nice watch and minute (well, quarter, the poor man's minute) repeaters are not all that common as well as being works of art. If it turns out to be a VC even better.

What can you buy it for?

Certainly looks like it may have VC parentage.

If the buy price is only 10 -20% of perceived value, its probably worth a punt.

PS You certainly got some research started ;)

I'm a poor man, or in the process of becoming so ;)

Well, if we open up to find something like this....

Anyway, with my luck.... I was winning a mislabeled ebay auction for an old Lange gold pocket when the thing got yanked by the Lange Museum!
