By the way, John - what camera did you get? Whatever it was, it obviously suits the way you work, your photos are stunning...

It is a cheap Samsung ES10. 89 Euros at MediaMarkt. :D Until I finish the house, I don't want an expensive camera because I leave it laying around in less than ideal conditions.

As a painter I am careful about composition and I just put the camera on manual, give it a little less exposure to get more contrast and saturation of colors, NEVER use flash, never put the watch under direct light (at least for artistic shots). I often focus on a bright reflection, then move focal point (with finger lightly depressed on shutter release). Get big contrast this way, lights are not washed out, and camera stays focused on the watch.

I haven't yet learned to do "post processing" - all those pics are as they came out of the camera, they aren't even cropped. As I said, painting makes you very aware of composition so I do my cropping with the view finder.

I know a little bit about photography, not much, but the basics. The main thing is, like Col says, taking time, thinking about what you are doing. But his complaint about digital, about being able to take tons of pics and throwing the rest away, is EXACTLY what professionals do. For every pretty pic in National Geographic, there are a few hundred rejects of the same scene. If you have no idea about composition, light, how the camera works, etc., you can take five thousand pics and you won't get a professional looking pic. But it is true for those that know a little bit, digital has opened up a new world...

Yup - I used to work with a lot of pro photographers and many of them used film the way amateurs use digital. A lot of press guys would have 250-frame rollfilm backs on their 35mm cameras and would usually expect to get through the whole thing - occasionally more than one if they were shooting a major event.

Me, I know most of the technical stuff as I worked in photography for a while, but lack the talent. I can take a good photo when I work at it and force myself to go slowly, but it doesn't come naturally to me - and admittedly, I tend to be lazy. I'll put the effort in when it's something I know is going to get published (which is, admittedly about 50% of the photography I do), but the rest of the time I'm just a happy snapper who occasionally gets lucky. Admittedly, though, I rarely crop my photos - 80-90% are used exactly as they were framed by the camera.

Anyways, thanks for the compliments, I spent time on the last shots I posted, they were all around the job site, the last one is right under the cement mixer where I dump when I am cleaning it out after using it. The sand/water/cement forms interesting patterns on ground over time.

Damn - well, there's no substitute for talent, and you sure got it. ;)

You're getting much better shots than you did with your old camera, though so the new one must suit you :)

Can you do what JohnG has done, without some of the specialist tools?

Doesn't require a lot of tools - just a few basics. Movement holder, case-back opener, screwdrivers. A hand presser would be useful, but an old ballpoint pen could be used instead. You can pick up everything you'd need on eBay for relatively little...

Yep John agree about the way pros use film however they KNOW composition etc and don't need to be forced into thinking about it. Where the ease of digital causes probs in in the amater who can't afford to waste film. Take a look at the quality of a roll of super8 movie film. Every shot on that 8min roll has thought behing it 'cause you had to think first. You only had those 8min of film and it was expensive stuff. Once again with pros it doesn't matter, they allready do a great job but an amater with a video just tends to point and pull the trigger with little thought to framing etc.

I allways have shot trannies greg. I cried when Ektachrome went off the market. BTW, you know Kodachrome is finsihed? Just that damn Gold stuff now from the GYF (Great Yellow Father for you non Photogs). Yes, I would prob feel a bit better about digital if I had a D50 to play with. A cheap 35mm was allways a better bet than a cheap digi tho. One thing that digital will never do as well as film is B&W and I happen to love working in B&W. Ilford and Agfa were/are the kings of B&W film, mainly Ilford here. I'd still love to pick up a cheap 6x6 but everyone just bought digital back for them

Yeah - there had long been rumour that Kodak were going to discontinue Kodachrome - it was part of the reason I decided to try digital as Kodachrome 25 counted for about 70% of my photography - K200 being about half of the rest, the balance being B/W.

And yes, I used Ilford B/W stock too, on occasion - was never fond of Agfa, TBH

as a rough estimate, how much would the basics cost?

how reliable are the hand wind movements used in PAM reps?

do they cost much and are they easy to fit as replacements?

6497s are damn near bomb proof (whether Asian or Swiss). Probably the most reliable movement in reps today. Check Getat's site for pricing...

I have to say, both of the watches I've got so far with the 6497/6498s in (IWC rep and the PAM 111 homage) have felt sturdy as anything when winding, not at all like the automatics that I've hesitantly wound notch by notch half a turn with gritted teeth lol

For the money, the movements seem amazing quality. Both of mine seem to have about 56 hour PRs as well!

GetatWatch recently started producing a sterile "stealth" dial with glossy black numerals that contract very subtly with the mat black dial, at time visible, at times not, depending on the angle of illumination. I bought a PVD Radiomir homage (reviewed here: http://www.replica-watch-guide.net/forum/i...?showtopic=1703 ) from Getat with this dial and I immediately saw the potential that this dial would have in other cases.

I subsequently purchased another Radiomir homage, polished SS, also with the same dial. Again, the watch was simply stunning.

Er, these don't appear to be on the site anymore!

Has he taken them off?? :D

Nope - you're just looking in the wrong place. Both dials and watches are still there.

I'd love it if Tat would do that dial/watch in 47mm. The perfect size imho...

The PVD 6497s were seemingly impossible to find for a while! Not sure if supply is better now, I've not checked for a while.

I got highly inspired by this stealth Mini fiddy that I first saw on WUS.....As a result I asked Getat to make me this...

2011-12-20121151.jpg

It seems I have brazenly copied it  ....only I couldn't find a 'domier' crystal and one without the annoying blue AR...

I know we can remove the blue AR but I don't have the balls to attempt it....If I screw up, which I will, my watch will be ruined and I don't want that.

Only if we could get a Chief AR on these dome crystals...that would be amazing, isn't it.
