If the former, a hand held style like this- http://watchbitz.com.au/shop/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=318 is the go. Make sure it has alloy dies, not brass, as they strip threads. If its a bench mount and will do multiple jobs including crystals, this style,http://watchbitz.com.au/shop/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=58 with supports on both sides and screw mechanism is probably better, in the lower cost units. If you go for a lever action, make sure it has a very robust body, to minimise flex and keep the jaws in line, like this-http://watchbitz.com.au/shop/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=53 The higher level presses like this-http://watchbitz.com.au/shop/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=416 will give better longevity and better all round performance, however they do come at a cost. Actually you'll have a much better feeling over the pressure you're applying with a lever-type press. The screw-type press will take a little more practice to operate properly. Robert call the big one above "the first press I have never broken a crystal with". As long as the crystal is going to fit the screw press is a lot more progressive, you can increase pressure in a very even gradient. Of cause if the crystal is the wrong size any press will break it and it will be harder to pick the point where you know it won't fit using a screw press. No worries, I find it very interesting to have the point of view of others, espcially when it's different from mine. I have 3 presses, a Bergeon, a blue lever-type from Alan, and the screw-type from Cousins. And the screw press is actually the only one I've ever broke a crystal with. I find the resilience inducted by the lever mechanism to be very helpfull in getting a better feeling over the force you're applying. That said, I haven't pressed hundreds of crystals, so I still have time to break crystals using the other ones. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
