sconehead 5 Posted October 12, 2009 Just a quick tutorial for stripping down a vintage Hamilton 917 pocket watch movement. The movement itself was running fine but in order for it to fit the 44mm case I plan to use it in, (or any 6497 case for that matter) the mainplate needs it’s diameter shaved by 1-2mm. So rather than try doing this with the full movement intact, I decided a complete disassembly would be the safest route. There were no instructions to be found on the web but with the movement being of a simple construction I chanced going in ‘blind’ and everything turned out ok. Here’s a step by step pictorial of how I did it as a guide should others need to work on this particular movement... In my opinion, when examining this movement, the craftsmanship and components were far superior to any ETA movement I've ever worked on... NB* left hand thread!!! the lip that requires grinding down... all parts ready for the ultrasonic then oiling/reassembly... I'll try to do the same sort of pic/tuto thing for when I put it back together... edit: what's that strange blue flashing banner I see under my avatar??? sconehead 5 Posted October 12, 2009 And the monkey hits 2,000! Congrats for saving it for a quality post. Thanks Doc...I did consider Cpt Monkeymax but figured posting something that may help in the Google search rankings would be better...
greg_r 81 Posted October 13, 2009 Now that's quite a 2,000th post. Great stuff! You are indeed worthy of Chimpmax.... which gives me an idea....

AustinTech 0 Posted October 13, 2009 Bobby, THAT is how you do 2,000. Nothing but cool info. Well done.
Massimo 53 Posted October 13, 2009 Very impressive! It does look like a very well made movement too. Disassembly is one thing but reassembly is a black art which seems to be beyond me: kudos.
