Hamilton 917 disassembly

Recommended Posts

Just a quick tutorial for stripping down a vintage Hamilton 917 pocket watch movement.

The movement itself was running fine but in order for it to fit the 44mm case I plan to use it in, (or any 6497 case for that matter) the mainplate needs it’s diameter shaved by 1-2mm. So rather than try doing this with the full movement intact, I decided a complete disassembly would be the safest route. There were no instructions to be found on the web but with the movement being of a simple construction I chanced going in ‘blind’ and everything turned out ok. Here’s a step by step pictorial of how I did it as a guide should others need to work on this particular movement...

In my opinion, when examining this movement, the craftsmanship and components were far superior to any ETA movement I've ever worked on...

Thanks Doc...I did consider Cpt Monkeymax but figured posting something that may help in the Google search rankings would be better...

Very impressive! It does look like a very well made movement too. Disassembly is one thing but reassembly is a black art which seems to be beyond me: kudos.
