where to get good vintage GMT master?

Recommended Posts

Madness

Hi all,

Just purchased a TW sub from BK and now looking for a good vintage GMT master with the pepsi bezel. I've contacted RolexAddict to request prices and learn about his mods to the 1675 and I see pure time (link below) is sellling a 6542 with ETA.

Anyone have a vintage GMT master and have recommendations on where to get a good one? I'll wait to hear back from RolexAddict, but in case he's currently out of my price range (just spent a lot on BK sub!!) curious about other good sources.

Pure time: http://puretimewatch.com/product/vintage-gmt-master-6542-black-dial-bluered-eta2846/

Thanks much!

If you don't want to do the work your self RA is the only way to go imo. There is no good out of the box 1675, and one needs to be assembled from parts, were the Cartel's 1655 is one of them

I took the 6542 way, because I like the bakelite insert on it and the no crown version looks better to me , but want to built also 1675 version like Solkry has got :) maybe PANAM version so will built something :) As for the 6542, the main wrong thing is wooky rehaut ... then the triangel hand has to be lumed and a case a bit reshaped not to have that much sharp edges. as for the bakelite insert the bakelite is really looking like from 21 century cnc drilled so it need some refinishing of hand to soften the edges of engraving and then just relume it or buy from Yuki parts for 250 USD. As for the crystal it need also to be replaced the best for Clarks crystal, because this one is not that tall and the edge is short where should a bit more wider top edge, then probably the wookynes of the dial will not be that noticable. But construction is amazing on this watch and I have waterproofed it to 3 bars with no problems. The riverted bracelet is sctreching so also very good maybe I will soak it into some oil to make it really soft but the whole watch is nice and light really nice piece :) and as you can see I have also painted the second hand white. The movement used it low beat swiss movement ETA 2846, what is really nice movement, mine was branded from different watch probably but in good shape and was possible to regulate it to -2/+2 seconds per day. The springbars are similar to gen style but not that quality, I think that sums everything up :)

There is a way of building a nice Pepsi GMT from an Exp2 described in RG's Rolex section. Just needs a new bezel construction, insert and dial, basically. Plus your strap / bracelet preference.

. I agree. The 3 must are - gen dial as all rep dials are poor, even those without the DATE word, gen insert, same thing all rep are horrible. And a wso bezel. All bezels are sub like and incorrect. Once these 3 are done u have a sweet gmt! U can substitute the gen dial with a yuki. Cheaper :)

Fatarms.... it would be interesting to see some macro shots of the scratches on the bezel insert, glass and case, so people could replicate while making their own vintage subs.

Could that be possible? :)

I'll do my best when I get home. At work for the next 5 hours or so... That pic was taken with my phone in a hurry a couple months ago.

The watch belonged to my fiance's grandfather, purchased in 1986 according to the paperwork that accompanied it. He wore it through 2007, I believe.

I'll try to play around with the light and camera to see what kind of shots I can come up with.

I think the NDT dial and WSO insert are acceptable. What do you think?

That would be great Fatarms! They would very useful pics to a lot of people including me.

I'm glad you decided to leave her unmolested!

Unless you go the almost gen route like Bigjule there is no substitute for RolexAddict.

Nothing and no one else come close.
