The American Watchmaker has some interesting stuff about colouring and getting effects with various metals, only thing is most invole sulphuric acid and even Dragons blood? John might find these home made potions useful methinks...

 

A more practical tip from the publication,

 

''To clean nickel. The nickel plates of watches are sometimes found to have rust stains on them. These can be removed by rubbing the spot with grease, allowing them to stand for a few days, and rubbing thoroughly with a cloth moistened with ammonia.''
