47mm Egi, Ferric chloride treated - updated

Recommended Posts

Timebandit

I have started a new Egi project, this time I have tried another mix for aging the metal.

Here is the glass with the ingredients : Ferric chloride pearls ( FeCI3 )

Filled up with warm water ( about 45° Celsius ) Mixed about 1:1 Pearls/Water

Mixed it until the pearls were dissolved

A complete 47mm Egi case hung in with some wire

Check the time when started to bubble

20120818_144602.jpg

Gave it a nice warm place on the terrasse, watching it while drinking a cold beer ( outside temperature was 36° Celsius )

Checking time for ending the process, 3 hours are enough ?

No idea, just need to check the result

Hmm, looks dark and very greasy. I had protected the christal with an Alu tape.

Completely disappeared, just some of the glue was left .

Ok, I thought it was better to use some latex gloves. Looks like this fluid is a bit more aggressive than rusty water

20120818_175133.jpg

Cleaned the case with water and an old toothbrush

Dryed the case and had a closer look the the metal, the mix was very abrasive.

Some of the materials were made from another Stainless steel alloy.

The screws, the bezel markers and the cg lever were not affected by the abrasive fluid.

Reassembling of the watch with sanded hands and modified dial

I gave the dial just a little bit of white spray to match the colour of the case as far as possible

Remounted the bezel markers after I had sanded them with 1000 grit sandpaper

Next to do is, make a new lume pearl and make a buckle, treated the same way.

Choosing some leather to make a nice strap for it.

James.

Nicely done mate, where do you find this "ferric chloride" pearls? I'm assuming they're some sort or fertiliser? Might be a fun project on the 60mm version, like stur's "rust-mariner", the egypt egi version.

I applaude your work

Thank you mate ! :)

Please can you then make some pictures where on what point you removed the bezel and how you safely removed it and installed it back again, so I will not break anything when i will try ? I want to mod my mini egi, and you already have experience of dozen them modded :) I am just afraid, because Webwinds mini egi, the bezel just snapped by it self.

Matej,

you can pop the bezel with an usual caseopener.

The important thing is to put the ring not back into the case when you reassemble it.

You have to put the ring into the bezel, than press it on the case and everything works as before

Thank you Stur,

I guess there are two 60mm Egi's, two 52mm Egi's and eight 47mm Egi's in my box

12 Egi's in summary :)

Yes, try it and let us see your results, maybe there comes out something very different.

It depends on the material alloy. It is different from supplier to supplier

Uwe, that looks awesome, bud. How do you stop the corrosion? Will the case continue to corrode as time goes by now that the surface has been pitted?
