Modding the "OFFICINE PANERAI" Text

The movement of PAM 111 and 112 is a piece of art. Panerai modifies a lot the movement ETA / Unitas 6497 adding some pieces and modifying others.

In this tuto we modify the text “Officine Panerai†that is engraved on one of the bridges. Follow some pictures of the gen.

Pictures of a gen 111H, the text is placed more to the right (in comparison with following versions)

Next picture is a gen 111I. Text is located a bit more to the left… now is more visible.

And follows a gen 111K, text is to the left, as well

As a conclusion, it seems that Panerai has moved the text to the left from series I. However, I have checked that the TEXT IS THE SAME: same font, same size. Therefore, the decals we are going to make here are adequate for all versions.

Our reps many times have a bad quality text “Officine Paneraiâ€, using stickers or engraved text. Here a couple of example of reps with quite bad replicated text:

Last picture shows a movement with stickers and this is the movement we are going to employ in this tuto. You can check that the rest of the movement is quite good. However, those horrible stickers are deteriorating the final result. Therefore, if you have a PAM with low quality stickers this tuto may be interesting for you, as the final result is really good.

As always we need good gen pictures. From one of these pictures the text “Officine Panerai†is cut and the image is improved pixel by pixel. This is a very time consuming task. With gen pictures we obtain the real size of the text.

To print this decal an excellent printer is required. I have checked three color laser printers with resolution of 1200 dpi, an only one of them is capable of producing a good text. BTW, the more expensive one. Follows a picture of the decals printed.

One the decals are ready we have to cut one. The cut has to be as close as possible to the text.

Next picture shows the very small size of the decal.

4229036907_146eff70e5_o.jpg

Next step is to remove the stickers form the mechanism. Easy task.

4229806244_2e8770d471_o.jpg

The area has to be well cleaned with alcohol.

4229037105_2af0cd239a_o.jpg

Now is time to add the decal. The decal is placed on a cup with distilled water.

4229037209_5e2895152f_o.jpg

It has to be on water 30 seconds.

4229806456_eaf97d93b7_o.jpg

And the decal is separated from the back paper.

4229037333_cee9e82724_o.jpg

It is time to put MicroSet solution on the area where the decal will be placed employing a small brush. The brush is used to place the decal is its place. As said before, two locations are possible.

4229806548_8c21b7a481_o.jpg

I this tuto the decal is placed in the two possible locations. First try, left position.

4229037465_1bb5fc4891_o.jpg

4229037537_2c05019d7a_o.jpg

Follows some pictures of the movement inside the case.

4229037673_56ac67ae0e_o.jpg

Next picture shows a comparison with a rep movement where the text is engraved. The final looking on both watches is very similar. Case with strap is the engraved text. Case without strap is the decal.

4229806902_83f2fa669b_o.jpg

Now the text is going to be placed on the position for 111H. Therefore, the first step is to remove the sticker. A good quantity of MicroSet is applied on the sticker with the brush, the borders of the decal are now visible.

4229806952_caeb193395_o.jpg

And the decal is removed using tweezers.

4229807008_af56b27bcd_o.jpg

Looking to gen 111H pictures we place the decal on the correct location. The final result follows:

4229037923_025ac9e3a8_o.jpg

And again the comparison with the engraved mechanism. Case with strap has engraved text.

If you are interested in these decals, just send me a pm.

Thanks for reading,

Francisco.

I've done this mod. He sells 3 decals for 10 euro...I have one left and have toyed with the idea of copying it and posting a file on the forums but I think it would cause a rumpus, plus I like Francisco, he's one of the few who deserves to make a little with all he contributes, at least he shares his knowledge unlike a lot of the other 'experts'...
