The Last Steps to the Gen (Part I) – Swan Neck & Incabloc Mods.– Jan 2013

Recommended Posts

thedoccwc

As much as I never plan to be so obsessive about making a rep look like a gen, this post has served an equally valuable purpose for me - education.

I might know a fraction more than any random person on the street, but my knowledge is still effectively zero compared to some of the luminaries here.

As such, the beautiful pictures and incredibly detailed descriptions here are horological porn for me.

Thus, thank you very much, ALE - spectacular post.

But I would like you read the WARNING at the beginning of my threads.

I would like too share my point of view about this matter:

Really these mods should come DIRECTLY FROM THE FACTORY, and then the cost would be minimum.

- Screw long or short: they cost almost the same. Maybe some dolars with a head like the gen.

- Swan Neck spring: same cost. We need only a good shape. The cost of good shape is the same as bad shape. I'm not asking for a functional spring, just a correct shaped one. No additional cost.

- Incablock: Gen Incabloc shape has a little more cost of rep. Some seconds in CNC machine. Maybe some dolars. Lyre-spring gen or rep : same cost.

- Crown "Slim" or "fat" : same cost

- Pin gasket: cost some cents. Asembly less 15 seconds. Maybe you can save time because we will need less adjustement. Therefore some cents or even less cost.

- Brushed gears and polished wheels: most expensive adding, no more 20'-25$ in factory

- Polished and flattened wheel screw: just to use the correct ones because many replicas V3 have correct screws.

Therefore, now I hope you get my proposals.

GET THE MODS FROM THE FACTORIES. They will cost less than 30-35$

Of course we have already very good Super replicas, but for a little effort and money we could get almost the gen

Just my thoiughts and idea

ALE

Maybe noob 111v50 will be there, my sons can enjoy it.

All this achieves is that every new noob ( believing this to be reality)...is going to hound the fukk out of all dealers demanding to know whether theirs has a long screw or short screw.....how 'curly' is your swan neck etc etc...with the inevitable result.........

DELETE :B):

If I ever get that anally-retentive...give Pat my full permision to throat-punch me at his convenience or break out his AR15 and put Balad out of his misery by double-tapping me on the noggin...... :B):

BUT......great article......lot of hard work

Well that's one less concern YOU have these days...

So Biddy, how do you feel about TC (aka Thomas) and his similar type of work/posts related to the classic Rollie sub?

Totally agree how would you not want theses mods for $30/$40 if that was possible.

Its not about fooling any one its about feeling you have a really good rep

So...you dont think the standard fare is a really good rep..........given that it will 'fool' 99% of the great unwashed public......you think it's worthwile to go to these lengths to fool the remaining 1%...who are most likely Paneristi...who you're not gonna fool anyway....or is it just as said above....to fool yourself.......'cos there's an awful lot of people on here who think they're 99% on the way to gen.....in reality they're 100% off from it.

It's simply anal retention allied to the Emperor's ermine coat ...as Luth said...it will ALWAYS be a fake !

does people miss the point here? its never about replica but personal achievement? yes, it's still a replica for, but the journey makes OP a better watchfreak :)

The next step is to mod these on the molecular level.

I am not discounting OP's work, but this will create nightmares for TDs that get hounded by noobs that will expect this level of detail every time, and will post their QC pics because they themselves can't tell if the watch has these attributes or not. It will ruin the QC "system" and end up costing everyone in the long run. You will never get a true 1:1 copy of a $5k watch for $300. If you want to spend time and money to perform these mods after you get the watch, so be it. I will enjoy my reps out of the box for what they are.

I must say I agree. I have only one rep being modded, and that's to install a new crown and tube. While it's there, it's getting a relume and waterproofing, but it's the only one I'll ever get done I think, until another crown goes :)

These obsessing threads always conjure up the image to me of the junior office suit, who frantically trying to invent himself gets a rep - but henceforth lives terrified out of his mind lest Jeremy from accounts (who everyone knows has a gen) - is able to out him, and thus bring about the resultant crumbling of his pathetic image.

A succinct quote from another forum:

Novesh;234670

The huge obsession people have with 1:1, rep to gen quality is outrageous, its like driving a corvette and thinking your d!ck got bigger, just does not happen...
