Can't decide what to get next

Recommended Posts

chriszammett

I've got a couple of Panerai's already. I can't decide what to get next.

I've hankered after a fiddy for a while, but of late I've been quite liking the idea of a Bell & Ross.

I also flit with the idea of a chronograph of some sort, although I'm not sure I would go down this route. I'm a big leather strap fan, so the chrono would have to go on leather.

Can anyone persuade me which way to go, or give me some other suggestions?

I quite like some of the IWC's. Not sure though... maybe not chunky enough

For Chronographs, Ebel 1911 is one of the best and most accurate, although this picture doesn't do it justice.

Great advice!!!

IWC BP is "a must!" to any collection.

Mary has gorgeous BP with grey dial, working power reserve and correct date window.

Or DSSD with ETA, great watch too.

That does look pretty nice actually.

I was thinking of the Fiddy or Bell & Ross on a blue leather strap - bit of colour for the summer. The IWC, might be a bit classy for those purposes!

Hello Undecided,

It's very hard to give useful suggestions unless we know a bit more about your taste.

Case in point: from you existing collection of Panarai, I would have made the--wrong?--assumption that you like simple, clean design and that you would then like the IWC pilot series (Doppelchronograph, Filiegerchronograph, Mark XVI, Big Pilot...). Apparently, you don't like the IWC Big Pilot because it is not "chunky" enough, and by that I assume--probably wrongly again!--that you meant not big enough? The IWC Big Pilot is plenty big at over 46 mm. Or perhaps you meant it is not gussied up enough like a Breitling or Hublot. Then again you like the simple, clean look of the Panarai. Hmm...So you see how off the mark and useless my recommendations would have been. Taste is a very personal thing--trivial quote of the day!

This is what has worked for me: I group various aspects of the watch into a few catetgories:

the look: design of the case, style (classic, retro, sporty, modern, big, small, chunky, on steroid...)

the features: day, date, month, chrono, power reserve...

the movement: Swiss ETA, Valjoux, Japanese, Asian, Martian, I don't know or I don't care...

the cachet: prestige, tradition, mystique, brand name (I love Rolex, I'll never own a Rolex...)

If you know your own taste well and mention just a few likes and dislike from each category, then it's pretty easy for people to make helpful suggestions.

Talking about that, does this help at all?

hmm - Robert or Mary (PrestigeWatchCo / Watchinternational) between them can get just about anything, but there's nobody that particularly specialises in VC. Any of our dealers should be able to do the business for you - depends on what model you want, though...

Do you definitely want a rep or would you be happy with a homage?

There's a few B&R homages on ebay - have a search for 46mm watch and they should come up

Or you might be able to get them from jackson tse or getat if you ask them?

Congratulations, you are moving up the watch ladder. That is quite an impressive-looking watch.

But if you are also looking for a brand with prestige, cachet--whatever you call it--Vacheron Constantin is not the best choice.

Vacheron lives off its historical reputation for 250 years of uninterrupted production but it was floundering badly for 2-3 decade before it was sold to the Vendome Group about 10-15 years ago. For a while VC produced junk based on the dreaded ETA 2892 and sold these watches at hideously expensive prices. It seems to do a little better now as the leading technical brand of the Vendome group (Piaget, Cartier, Dunhill) which makes mostly "jewelery" watches. Among collectors of genuine high-end mechanical watches, VC is not considered in the same league as Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Breguet and JLC. So, if you want a prestige, top-echelon brand, forget about Vacheron. But if you want just the look, by all means, go for it.

I quite like that Chopard actually.

And I think I would prefer a rep than homage, although I could be convinced otherwise...
