Why the fascination with Panerai / Pams?

Recommended Posts

Djames77

I'm a noob of course but I don't understand why the people of the board have such a fascination for the watches and brand. I've read about the history and I still don't get it? Lovely watches but I can't see why they are held above all other, can someone educate me please?

I think it's the design and wrist presence.

Add the celebrity crop then you have what we have now...

hello Djames.

Like some love Rolex, Bretiling... and Pams... its just a matter of taste :)

for me: they are timeless, clean design and great presence in your wrist.

Spot on! I didn't see the appeal in them at first then I bought a 111 and my addiction started from there. I now have 7 PAM's and a wanted list of a good few more ;)

I also found they have the uncanniness to have large cases, lovely dials, and not look overwhelming on the wrist.

We're talking about 44mm 45mm cases here. Where as a 44 pilot will look too big for some, the Pam's balance it with dial design, and case height.

They are hideous and all look alike to me

I've tried to like them, bought them, sold them, now I just ignore them!

I can't understand why so many people love avocado. It's disgusting. But hey some of those Pam's are just lovely and not like anything else.

I was never a massive PAM fan but there is something about them that draws you in. In some quarters they have a brash city boy trader image, some would argue they are too big and other would question their history and provenance. But then you forget all that and look at the clean simple and elegant design. Then there is the vibrant strap culture which is almost as exciting as the watches themselves. Finally, in the short time ive been in the rep world I found some of the best reps made are Panerais. Their popularity means rep factories are happy to invest time and money in making better reps.

Because they all look the same it's easier to have lots of super reps.

Only joking ;-)

my $0.02

1. most are Frigg'n HUGE

2. real ones are VERY expensive. this drives people to want to buy them so they can feel like they have expensive taste too. same reason Rolex is soooo popular.

3. very cool, subtle and elegant styling.

I recently bought a 380 and absolutely love it but its a Radiomir. The Luminor design doesnt appeal to me. Dont like the crown guard.

They are different. Not easily confused with any other watch. Distinct look. Like others have said, if you enter an AD and put one on you'll understand. Honestly, the sandwich dial got me hooked!,

I was in the Panerai? "meh" camp. I like the Egi but I thought all the othe PAMs looked kinda the same. Then I bought the 341 and just the way it looks on the wrist and the way the dials change color .. it's hypnotic.

I didn't get it at first, but now I wear an 036 every other day. I like the subdued titanium look :) On the other days I wear a Ferrari Gran Turismo, which is made by Panerai :)

I didn't like them at all...then, I tried on a gen while looking at other brands. Off all the watches I tried on that day, it looked the best on my wrist and now I'm a huge fan.

I'm new here too.

Guess the Pam's will have to grow on me.

At this juncture the only PAM I'd like to spend any time with is this one...............
