Stripped crown thread

Recommended Posts

Anyone know how I can fix a stripped crown thread?

I,m not sure if the thread is in the case, movement, or on the stem? All I know is the crown will no longer screw back down.

The watch works perfectly otherwise.

How much will this cost to repair? Is it a new case or just the stem?

If you can find out the dimensions of the crown tube (it's usually this that strips) you can get something similar here, http://www.cousinsuk.com

Some people have had a good temporary fix by pinching the tube slightly with pliers. It's worth a try since it's already stripped.

So how much work is involved in this? I assume I have to take the back off and movement out?

If I pinched the tube, would it still work when having to set the date on non 31 day months?

So I need to measure the outside diameter of the crown tube with a vernier/micrometer or similar precision measuring instrument?

Does the crown tube come off the crown and if so, how?

Are there any links to stripping down a UPO?

Just pull it out to the time setting position and try to gently squeeze the tube with a pair of needle nosed pliers would be my guess. I've never done it but I've heard other people say it works as a temporary fix. By making the tube slightly oval, you give the crown some threads to bite on, on the wider side of the tube. Like I say, no guarantees, but it might be worth trying.

About $4.00 a tube. Freight is killer to US though since they only ship here with tracking.

Franscisco did a tute on this and said it is "Tube A" from Cousins.

But, you need to take down the outside diameter of the base part that fits into the watch case. He did it on a lathe. So some machining is necessary.

I have seen the tute by fransisco and its way beyond my limitations. Something for a specialist to repair I think.

Any recomendations?

Would it be cheaper to buy a basic cheapo Planet Ocean and canabalize the stem from that?

You wouldn't neccesarily need a lathe. With careful sanding/filing you could get the tube to be a snug fit. Glueing it in with epoxy would fill any voids and make it waterproof imo...:P

One thing I didn't understand is why didn't he just drill out the case to fit the tube? Seems a lot easier.

Also, I would think if you got the tube any decent watch repair guy could drill it out and install it for you.

Is it the tube that has the internal thread then?

Hi there :D

the dimension I turned with the lathe was the esternal diameter that is inside the crown, not in the case, as shown crearly in the tuto.

the thread is internal.

That's how it appears to me from the tutorial. Pull the crown out to the time setting position and you'll be able to see it.

I don't have a UPO to look at but my 42mm PO is threaded on the outside just like a Rolex.

Edit: Thanks for stopping in to clear that up Franscisco.

Turning and checking each time if the crown fits and screw well:

SO glad I found this thread - Just did the pliers trick on my UPO chrono and it worked a treat!!! at least for now problem solved.

Still going to contact some of the dealers for a spare part but at least I don't have to worry about accidentally bending the stem now.

Thanks guys!!
