21J Movement - Good or Bad?

Recommended Posts

Guys,

Was told that the watch i wanted to buy only comes in 21J movements. Is this a reliable movement? Please advise. Thanks.

They're usually fine - actually, 21J doesn't refer to a single movement, there are a variety. In general, quality control isn't quite what it should be (it's a VERY inexpensive movement), but if you get a good one, they can be very reliable - I've owned over a dozen over the years and haven't had a problem. It does slightly depend on the watch, however - the fewer complications there are, the more likely it is to be reliable.

One advantage with the 21Js is that replacement movements can be had very cheaply - so it's often fairly inexpensive to resurrect a failed watch...

What Greg said.

There are a dozen or more types of 21j from the cheapest crud to decent ones that will last for many years.

What watch were you interested in?

Meah, I'd forgo a 21j in a Pam.

Save a bit more and get a better MVT. The gen uses a modified 7750.

Sometimes there isn't much choice - several of the PAM reps are only available as 21Js (my mini Egi and 305 homage being amongst them). I think the same applies to the current crop of 40mm models.

Is there any Pam Reps which uses other movements?

Plenty - most of the better PAM reps use either the 6497 (for hand-winds) or 7750 (for autos and chronos).

Here's a movement shot of my 127 (Fiddy), which uses a decorated 6497 (basically derived from the same movement as the gen uses)

The PAM I'm wearing today is a 288 Radiomir, which runs an A7750:

Absolutely

Its a known fact (only amongst opinionated forum dwellers)

That 21j movements absolutely categorically dont/never work

Which is exactly the reason why they are installed in watches in the hundreds of millions year on year

So perhaps the rising sea levels erroneously attributed to carbon footprints and other such tree hugging BS is more correctly due to all those countless millions of totally unusable watches being thrown in despair worldwide into the sea

I bought it from PWC (PrestigeWatchCo) about a year ago - it's his top of the line 127. Great watch. Cost was around $300 - the blue shark strap it's on was bought separately, though...

I concur. I have theorized this for the past year. I bring it up amonst friends and family only to be dismissed as an idiot. Finally - I AM VINDICATED!!!

My PAM222 with 21j and Power Reserve, works like a horse, no any problems.
