BentleySharp 0 Posted December 18, 2013 I have seen all wooden watches before but never a flying tourbillon! Am I impressed at the craftsmanship? Yes. Would I wear it? No.
northantsrich 1 Posted December 18, 2013 Would you buy it? Is it waterproof?
BentleySharp 0 Posted December 18, 2013 Would you buy it? Is it waterproof? Good point. A wooden watch gets wet...That's all she wrote. Even variations in the humidity can make wood swell and warp. These being such small finely crafted parts, I can only imagine how easily they would be subject to failure...

neogeo999 27 Posted December 18, 2013 The price for the turbillon is 150,000 EUR $196,000 not bad...
Odyseus 1 Posted December 18, 2013 I guess if the gears are made from high quality hardwood, then they may be immune to serious warping etc It's interesting to watch as I'm about to start building wooden clocks

COMPLICATIONS 0 Posted December 18, 2013 (edited) I'd bet he is using stabalised wood which is wood held under a resin then a vacuum is pulled to get the air out of the wood and when the vac is released the resin floods the air pockets in the wood. You then cook the resin at around 100c to set it. You can then machine it like perspex or tufnol. Knife makers use this method to stabilise scales especially for skinning knives that spend a lot of time in claret. It's commercially available and one brand name is cactus juice! Just guessing mind....... Edited December 18, 2013 by COMPLICATIONS

millionaire wannabe 1 Posted December 22, 2013 (edited) WOW not ow... I suppose even if I had funds for this, it'd be weird wearing something more expensive than my Lamborghini (if I had the funds for THAT)... the rarity factor is off the charts though, that alone makes it totally worth it. But first you'd have to hire a full time bodyguard (watchguard?) armed a la matrix gun trenchcoat, since you'd be walking around with something that could buy a big house! YaYoGakk 1 Posted December 22, 2013 Impressive. I know, at least from guitars. "Roasted" wood is pretty impervious to humidity. They take the wood, put it in a vacuum and cook it at a high temp. This removes nearly all of moisture from the wood and kinda 'caramelizes' the wood making it insanely stable.
J.S. 0 Posted December 22, 2013 How did he make wooden main spring or his spring reserve is just 1-2 hours

fatarms 7,843 Posted December 22, 2013 Seems he's made quite a few watches and clocks out of wood. Pretty impressive. http://danevych.com/en/collection.html
myaz 3 Posted December 22, 2013 Anyway you look at it, wood wears faster than metal and is subject to ambient humidity. So, respect the workmanship, pass on practicality
wrenches&watches 0 Posted December 22, 2013 Think he'll try a dive watch? A coat of wax per ATM?
