Bond 50 Upgrades?

Recommended Posts

Iceman321

I recently bought the Omega Bond 50th (the $100 version). I was wondering if there are upgrade available to fix the faults (the pearl doesn't line up with the numbers correctly, and more). Sorry, I don't really know much about watches. Thanks!

Welcome!

Don't waste any money modding what you have. Sell your $100, 21j cheapo and then purchase the much better 3rd version that can be found here.

I'm not saying to buy from TT. I'm just giving the URL so you can see the current best version. I have this and love it!

Thanks for the input guys. Wouldn't it be cheaper to mod the watch I already have, and how noticeable are the faults in the cheapo to the average eye?

I'm not out to impress. IMHO, It's no so much as what's noticeable to others but what level rep you want. For me, I only care about what and how I feel about the watch I wear. It's not about what anyone else would think or say.

With that said the tells are huge, IMO.

1: There isn't any index marker at the 3:00

2: The rotating bullet on the rotor doesn't have the silver fired primer

3: The color red on the 50 is wrong

4: happy feet

5: incorrect lume colors

6: no proper diver extension on bracelet

6: much better movt. ( 21j vs. 25j Swiss 2824-2) Not that I'm a believer on real Swiss being present :)

I always say buy the best version for what you can afford of what you want. It will save you from being disappointed and $$ from ultimately buying the nicer version in the end.

I say this from experience...I've been there many times.

Nice job Kcore

Thanks Dave - there are a few more like color used on bezel, no AR and having a #1 of a limited ed :)

But again, at the end of the day it's what the owner is comfortable with. A $100 for the rep is a very good price for what it is.

Would you not find the bond stuff cheapens an otherwise good planet ocean?

Yes and no. I know not the best answer.

I'm a huge Bond fan and collector of the movies and memorabilia. I was bummed when the Salzman / Broccoli franchise, well actually the Brocolli family as Salzman had already sold out his interests when the change was made to Omega and real commercialization of product in the movies was made.

Anyway, when the first Omega limited Bond edition watches were announced, I camped out on my AD's front door. They couldn't wait to get rid of me as I was told, my nose was constantly marking up and fogging their front window :) Well, each limited edition IMO was awful in your face stupid and besides is a limied edition really limited when 100,000 are made?

All this held true for me until the 50th anniv of the franchise watch was released. This watch was beautiful! The "007" logo that was placed as wallpaper across the black dial only showed itself in just the right light at just the right angle ( like a good spy) . Nothing in your face about it. The use of Bonds signature Walther PPK, .380 ACP as part of the rotor was genius, again IMO. And this time, using the historic & iconic "down the barrel" shot on the caseback was simple and eligant.

Unfortunately for me, it came out at a time that I couldn't drop $4K on a watch, so when the 3rd version rep cam out I snatched it up till the day comes and the day will come when I will have my gen!

BTW, if you can't tell I'm a HUGE Joker ( Mistah J) fan too!

I'm sorry Iceman if I highjacked your thread - I'm mad you know!

I think the Skyfall rep is pretty good too, as it's relatively understated like the 50th. I just don't like the 50th because it's a 41mm seamster, where the Skyfall is on a larger PO.

I understand but considering Bond went from a smallish Rollie sub, the 41mm Seamaster works for me :)

Don't have to - Bond's Rollie used in Live & Let Die contained 2 very unique Q branch gadgets, an electro- magnetic field that could deflect a bullet but more importantly, could attract metal objects. It also contained a circular saw in the bezel. I dare say these impressive trade craft tools well deserved air time :)

You told such a beautiful story about this watch that I actually want one now. I'm serious, too.

The rep I linked to is a beauty. It has an amazing quality look and feel to it. I've tried on the gen easily 5 times at a few different ADs ( was actually put on store restriction in one) and this rep is AMAZING! I say, go for it!

In Skyfall, he switched to the PO, so we'll have to see if that continues into the next movie...

I'm not really an Omega fan to beging with. The brand just caught my eye because of the connection to 007, sorry :)

Not totally correct - In Casino Royale, the 45.5mm PO 600M made it's debut. Look closely and you can see it in the first quarter of the movie - Vesper Lynd compliments Bond on his blue face Seamaster 300m as their on the train. Also in Quantum of Solace Bond sports a smaller, 42mm black face PO 600M.

One thing that I like is the fact that Bond now played by Daniel Craig uses his fists and so much gadgets anymore.

Woah this thread has a lot of replies! I love my rep. I just don't want any faults that indicate it's a cheapo. Can I send it in to make it look more like a gen?

I again apologize for hijacking your thread but the answer to your question is in the first 2 replies. Dave and I answered it. I even provided all the major faults afterward. What don't you understand?

Sorry Iceman, either keep what you have or get the better copy.

On the other hand, the worst fault is not present at yours - the short minute hand. I think that is really the fault 99.9% would have a slight chance of seeing.

The other faults will largely go unnoticed.

If you are not embarrassed by any of the other shortcomings, I would keep it as it is and wear it proudly !

castle, take a close look at the gen. I'm sure you'll see that all rep version, at least the ones I've seen don't have a short minute hand.

Mate I don't think you are understanding the replies.

The cheapo is a good rep for the money but it is and will always be a cheapo, I have one and it has a significant flaw in the crystal but it still looks great and I still love it.

Any mods that you get done by someone else on it will cost more than if you just sell your original watch on M2M and put some extra cash into getting a better quality rep.

Or you could just overlook the flaws/tells and enjoy you watch for what it is!
