lap9387 1 Posted May 20, 2014 So, because i like tinkering things, i was wondering if anyone could recomend a cheap movement to practice on, because im unsure: will a 21j movement be the same build as a 25j but have different bits that tick?? therefore i can buy a cheap 21j movement and practice on it. OR if its different, do i need a cheap 25j movement to practice with? and what would be a cheap movement for practicing?
J!m 289 Posted May 20, 2014 If you are just starting out, I suggest pocket watch movements. The larger parts are easier to work with.
Pseudonym 0 Posted May 20, 2014 Do not, I repeat; do not start with a 21J. I speak from experience. Reason for why - very little "how to" threads & articles to assist you. As Jim Said... Pocket watch. Even a 6497 would be good.
lap9387 1 Posted May 20, 2014 cheers guys... is there a particular pocket watch mechanism i should look for?
Aren 27 Posted May 21, 2014 An American pocket watch or a 6497 as Jim suggested. Good screw drivers, tweezers and a magnifying visor. Good Luck
J!m 289 Posted May 21, 2014 Maybe a Russian pocket watch will be cheaper.. I suggest a working and non working one of the same model if possible.
elconquistador 46 Posted May 21, 2014 The A6497 can be had for $40 and the components are large and seperate and of high quality, so things fit back together as they should. Don't start with a small movement or an automatic and by no means a chrono.
