Strap help

Recommended Posts

Cheesemonger

and no jokes please, I already thought most of them up. I just got this 372 from McJules and took a couple quick pics with different straps. I wanted to see if I could get some opinions from the members on which might be the best option as I can't decide!

Bronzy black with burnished gold buckle - so the buckle does not match the case, but I was thinking it does come close to the hand color.

Cognac gator - picked this up elsewhere from another forum member. The only thing I am not sure of on this one is the taper as this does not have one. Thinking the 372 might be better with a tapered strap.

Gen JV Nubuck - this is going on a Marlin 127, but I was thinking I could switch it back and forth pretty easily with the PAM screwbars.

Nubuck, but if I could suggest. The Ranger strap looks awesome on this. I bought an MP strap from an officemate which looks like it and it's a winner. :)

I don't think I have seen that strap before. I will have to investigate those.

Looks good, but I wonder if the pattern could be all larger scales vs some of the smaller scales near the lugs. Not sure if ostrich comes that way with all larger scales?

Jon could probably select the part of the hide that has all large scales, but normally I would think strap makers cut the hide in such a way that the large scales are distributed across several straps. Then again, I am not a strap maker. :)

Mysterio, you're right :)

cutting it that way allows to make 2 or 3 straps per leg, while cutting it along the large scale would only make 1 and stuck with unwanted parts (just part with no scales at all)

7.25" to 7.5" (when it is more humid).

Understood. Plus I did not think of the fact that for ostrich, the scale differential sizes are what gives that strap it's character.

I had serge create a custom strap for the 372 using black calf leather with an ecru stitch to match the numerals. I think it came out really nice:

I've since sold the 372 and have the strap up for sale in m2m.

I have a similar Simona strap (black leather with ecru stitching) and it looks the bomb with the matching colors on the PAM372. :D I am sure Jon, Serge, Dan or any other master strap makers can make it to your exact specifications.

Simona is a nice one. I have one of those on my 388. I have been staring at the ostrich quite a bit in the thread and I am leaning heavily towards that. The more I look at it, the more I like the random patterns. It gives quite a bit of character. So I am thinking, what about a black dyed ostrich, if such a thing is possible?

I have seen black suede ostrich hide so it's totally possible. :)
