Hell just the fact we've been debating it so much here makes it all the more alluring for its controversy!

Exactly and at the end of the day, even if it is not a "Real authenticated watch" there are plenty of fantasy rep watches that are great and plenty of us wear. If you like it, buy it.

Thanks for the info mate. The plot thickens. There are actual websites dedicated to people discussing both the above topics as I am sure you are aware, with people for and against. Either way (and of course one has to be careful with any of the information they garner from the web) whatever the truth is, I would feel gutted for the buyer of this watch if the information you have gathered is true, and I'd spend some time pondering over the experts who authenticate for auctions, etc.

Up to and including 2012, this was the 7th most expensive Rolex watch sold on auction or through private collectors:

RedDaytona_zpsc3fef7a4.jpg

Yikes! I don't know where that scan comes from, but that's a lot of erroneous information in one short paragraph!

1. Paul Newman didn't wear a Daytona in "Winning", and no one has ever produced a publicity still of him wearing one for the movie. By most accounts, he first started wearing a 6239 in the 1970s, after getting one as a gift from his wife.

2. Rolex has never designed a watch for Ferrari.

3."Stainless steel coated with tritium", as _DC_ points out. Really calls into question the writer's expertise!

4. 37mm is a case measurement, not dial diameter.

5. The only Daytonas with enamel dials are a select few automatics.

6. Ref. 6565 is an Oyster Perpetual with a c.1030 movement!

I couldn't have put it better myself and weirdly enough, I watched Winning over the weekend. But one does still beg to ask, who authenticated it for sale. And you're right, his missus gave him his first Daytona in 1972, but it was a 6263 Black dial, not the 6239 white dial he predominantly wore in the 70s on a Bund that a lot of people think.

I was able to find the article that entry came from (it shows up on a bunch of sites), but the author doesn't give any sources. Curiously, Googling "$267,203" only leads to those articles, so we can take that auction result with a grain of salt, too.

Anyway, I'm writing too much text on a "Vintage Porn" thread, so allow me to atone:

Backside of my 6239:

Some of my favorite chronographs:

I also like 1016s. A LOT:

Lastly, a very special 5512:

I agree. Conclusion=Everything we read on the internet should be taken with a pinch of the old saltiness. Nice collection by the way. Thank you for sharing on this thread.

I think the general consensus, correct me if I am wrong, is the handwound Lemania (clone).

Yo yo cats and kittens - just bought two more vinTona's! The gold 6265 black dial, and the SS 6262 (pushers) with panda dial - as shown above courtesy of LHOOQ.

Yay!

Those Daytonas are beautiful. The black bezel and white dial is one of my favorites.

When the bracelet comes off, I like to go with vintage Tropic rubber:

Thanks, DC! I have a big collection of Tropic rubber straps from the 1960s and 1970s. Mostly for dive watches, but when I discovered that a 19mm curved Tropic fits a Daytona almost perfectly...
