Recommended Posts

my cartel 1680 showed up today.

my first vintage piece.

plan on shaving the CGs and give it a nice re-lume.

possibly get a atheya 702 crown+tube.

wanna give it a few weeks before i start modding in case problems arise.

i gotta admit.. its pretty nice out of the box.

i think this is the first rep bezel that isnt held in by glue!!

2 ridiculously good reasons why Pseudonym should be mentioned here -

Lovely m2m Big Red paired with a nice Martu custom strap Rob PM'd me about.

Great combo which wouldn't be on my wrist without a great member here :)

Sillix was where I got mine with correct seconds hand - but that pic I posted was a gen from the vintage rolex forum.

THAT is interesting.... The gap between Oyster and Perpetual seems massive to me... I would never have guessed that was genuine.. BUT, it does explain the nice hands! I was hoping you were going to say it was a rep from XXXX and I could order one and take the hands out of it!

That's the 1680 I have (except mine is white).

Crown guards are stubby, so not a lot you can do without maing them "pointy" which was on the pre-'65 5512 model. I think they would shape up nice for that. 702 crown is on mine and it does look better. The tube has to be sunk in as deep as possible or you get a nasty gap under the bottom of the crown. If you don't have tools/skills for this, let one of the known modders do this for you (I am not one of them).

Dial is not that bad but the triangle at 12 is a bit too short. The point should come down a bit further.

I agree that for the price, just wear it and enjoy. The date mag is great, and that is a big tell for me at a distance on these.

Yea. I knew about the flaws before ordering but for the price, it's the best option at the moment with PT being out of stock.

Still haven't decided if I wanna even bother modding this. It looks decent for what it is out of the box and will take a lot of work to gtr even close to looking gen. I have seen potential with shaving the CGs from the outside and putting a 702 crown and tube in or letting RA do his magic on the crown.

I may just thin the cgs and wear it as is and get a PT version with a low beat ETA to mod later if it ever comes back to mod.

I think maybe a relume is about all I would really want to do to this watch.

Not bad for a $130 (shipped)

Who knows maybe it was a rep dial posted on VRF I spotted another on a rolex forum with big gap in spacing between oyster and perpetual also. (Third pic) This is now stormys, but for the seconds hand my silex on eta 2824 might be worth a punt don't know about minute and hour hands through it's maybe a case of buying for second hand only swap in your old hand and resell. I'd have never have known all these facts about 5517 if I hadn't learned from your eternal quest for milsub perfection.

Few shots of my 5513 gilt dial, it's really growing on me, still broken though haha!

I need to figure out a way to add a little patina to the gold hands, they're just a little too brand new, ya know? Other than that and the fact is prefer a slightly less bleached insert it's a stunner! I've really had a dichotomy over this one, I don't love it as much as it's price tag, but feel if I sold it I'd miss it and wouldn't be able to afford to build another...... life is hard haha!

It is indeed mine now and for the foreseeable future.

That first photo looks suspiciously like a RA supplied photo? :D

I very rarely wear it but it now lives on a pink NATO. I'm very excited as I've just added another amazing vintage Rolex Sub to my collection a few minutes ago too. :D

Nice!

Not a PN though, just a standard 6263! The PN dials are the tropical ones with a step in the register and Art Deco numerals on the subdials!
