BC1221 44 Posted August 24, 2014 Ive been adding up the numbers to start a grail build for a 16800 after seeing Mitch's. That is a thing of beauty. I figure a TC base with a Yuki dial should get me off to a good start. Found someone who can drill me lug holes.
mitchbaria 0 Posted August 25, 2014 (edited) Ive been adding up the numbers to start a grail build for a 16800 after seeing Mitch's. That is a thing of beauty. I figure a TC base with a Yuki dial should get me off to a good start. Found someone who can drill me lug holes. TC mid-case îs wrong for a 16800....The rehaut depth is far too deep.. Yuki has some really nice dials but I really spent some time learning the print on the sub dials starting in the early 80's going into the mid 90's and in order to really be period correct its important to get the right dial... I'd suggest an old MBW from member sales for a case then onto the real fun stuff..lol....it took close to two years to source the parts for that build and it's still not all the way finished,,, it was my Grail watch and what started my trip into reps...I'm glad you appreciate it...any advice or help I can provide, if you do go for one, I'll be glad to, just let me know....good luck... BC1221 44 Posted August 25, 2014 (edited) hrmm. but MB case wouldnt hold a 16800 dial would it? MB would be 26.5 and a 16800 dial is 27mm according to yukis dials. thats why i was thinkin a TC case. i honestly wouldnt mind a older 16610 if i had to. i just love the tritium markers and imo, the lug holes make a world of difference on a 16800. your ST case is awesome but it seems they only have the 18k gold ones now. someone is selling a franken 16800 on a TC base on RWI. thats where i got the idea. the thing is nice but i dont really like the 3135 clone movement. much rather have a simple ETA or ETA clone and as much as i love all the gen parts, id rather keep it rep and relatively cheap starting out. ive been lookin up parts, doin research.. etc. it seems like its gonna be quite the task maybe ill just get a TC with lug holes drilled for the time being Edited August 25, 2014 by BC1221
mitchbaria 0 Posted August 26, 2014 (edited) TC won't work for the build your suggesting...if it really doesn't matter then it wouldn't be a 16800 when your finished, now would it? You'll find (in time) everything really does matter... They're selling a TC with lugholes drilled in it and a t-25 dial,,, not a 16800 and only someone who doesn't know better would buy it....Also They should be called on it if it's labeled that way... Daywatch 4 Posted August 26, 2014 Started as a 5513 gilt dial&hands - meters first 369 dial submariner. Than the unexpected happened: this little Cartel basewatch just arrived on the 19th from Sead, its keeping incredibly good time with an extraordinary power reserve and it just "feels" good. Suddenly don´t want to fit the Athaya - crown and mess around with the stem (the one it comes with it much too fat) neither change the dial and hands. Maybe someday or with another 5512 2-liner. So it´s staying like this - going for a battered caselook with some new parts its supposed to be a 50 years old watch: aged case, softened/chamfered lugs/ drilled lug holes to accept gen springbars/ modded crownguards to gen spec/ installed gen-spec springbars on arrival.... & haven´t posted that many pics at once for long before/after and than - different stages - not in chronology

J!m 289 Posted August 26, 2014 Who the hell is MBW and where do we get these cases? It seems he may be out of business, but is HE or is the FACTORY done? These seems to be (from what I have read) the best basis for a build of a vintage sub. That Serti is geat, and I'd love to have the mid case as a basis for a build... Meanwhile still awaiting another 1680 case from eBay that promises to be nice... Needs a bit of crownguard work but otherwise a good find I think. I will be reporting/showing it here once assembled. MBW=Maria's Best Watches. A boutique in the MBK mall in Thailand. Reg/Narrika can get these cases I believe when he goes out there. Around $300-$400 and the best hands down.Forget Cartel, Angus, Phong, Yuki. For the $ IMNSFHO, its the best deal. I was just thinking that this morning...Connie where are you bud?!? ronin007 0 Posted August 26, 2014 The serti is a original mbw,8 years old with a gen swiss 2836,its been with the owner since new and only worn a few times,MBW stands for Maria's Best Watch.. and Maria is a gent, not a lady.. and his name is George, not Maria (of course, there is some history behind that..)
