UPDATE 3: Custom Rotor BUILD

Recommended Posts

Stuvetjee

Hello all,

So yesterday i started a thread about making a custom rotor for my new MB&F replica. Trailboss replied with a metal smith named Austin over at RWI. I instantly contacted him about my idea building a custom rotor for my MB&F rep. He then replied it was possible!

So that was great news and i instantly made a sketch and 3d file for him so he can cut one with Solidworks.

My rep rotor:

Gen rotor:

So i made a starter drawing for the cutout and engraving:

And then i traced the image in 3D software program and measured everything so it would be 1:1 in scale with my existing rep rotor :). Rep rotor weights total 3.4gr so if he can achieve that, then were all set to go. Since we are playing with a rotor, we need to have the weights at only one point to swirl it nicely around for powering the watch. As you can see on the renders, only one side has the weights.

UPDATE 2:

Drawing finished by Austin for the milling/CNC bench :). Such a nice bloke to deal with. So he is going to configure his machine now for a Stainless Steel rotor. After the rough cut, it will be engraved with the proper text on rotor. After that i need to find someone who can Rosegold plate it. :)

UPDATE 3:

Final rendering done with engraving. Now we start the lasercut and machining afterwards:)

Yup, I con't see this being cheap but it will get you the correct rotor and that will be the only one on your block.

Asked him many times what the cost would be, but he never replied to that question.

Have u been able to sort out somebody to do the gold plating for u? I actually have a plating unit from my jewelry making days and lo and behold , a small bottle of rose gold plating solution left as well.

I would have never even thought of doing that. Fantastic idea and congrats for actually working towards making it happen. I really am excited to see the finished product.

Thanks mate, i hope it will turn out great to, because this project will cost $200. So im not sure if i should risk that for something that also not might work.

No mate, still dont have a plater. But hope the plating wont cost alot, since this rotor project alone $200 costs. Seriously hope it works...

I remember on RWGforum.net a guy that was offering exactly this service. But can't find its post... Maybe asking directly into "General discussion" may help.

Im even considering quitting this project, since its so expensive and the guarantee of working not 100%

How about gold plating it yourself using gold solution and a battery?

aka electro-plating...
