GenTLe 1,510 Posted December 29, 2014 Hi All, I've been given from a colleague an old hand wind Vostok watch that was not working. It is the one with the tank on the black dial. To fix it I got from the web a not working donor movement where I took the needed part. Now it's time to reassemble the final one and I'm in doubt about which dial to put in,,, They both have practically no lume at all. The black one is maybe more characteristic, but the grey one has more historical value, because of the write "3aka3 md cccp" which means "Ordered from the defence minister", while the black only says "Made in CCCP". Which one will you choose? The case is the one on the right in the first 2 pictures. This is the strap that will complete the watch:
Hornet 1 Posted December 29, 2014 I'm gonna say the one with the tank. Has, as you've said, more character..... .....maybe mock up the dials in the case to see how they both look and post some more pics?
BigBuys 0 Posted December 29, 2014 Both are full of character but your choice of strap sealed the deal! Of course it should be the tank with red star.
GenTLe 1,510 Posted December 29, 2014 .....maybe mock up the dials in the case to see how they both look and post some more pics? Good idea.
reximda 0 Posted December 29, 2014 Tank! Though the other is interesting in the way it changes depending on the light. Still though... It's a TANK!
Hornet 1 Posted December 29, 2014 .....maybe mock up the dials in the case to see how they both look and post some more pics? Good idea. Hmmmm, that has actually made it more difficult...... ....the plain dial looks more classy, but the tank is winning it for me still. Tank! Though the other is interesting in the way it changes depending on the light. Still though... It's a TANK! +
D_Chico 0 Posted December 29, 2014 Definitely the Tank Good luck with the repair/build bud! Keep us posted with how it comes out!
BadPickle 2,766 Posted December 29, 2014 Not the tank, too cheesy.
PhillyRock 0 Posted December 29, 2014 I have two Russian automatic Vozstoks (or however it's spelled) laying around if you need parts. One runs when you shake it violently and the other is just dead. I've not opened them to tinker so I'm not sure what is/isn't there. They are yours if you need them.
N.Rico 1 Posted December 29, 2014 the plain one make it looks bigger and classic but the tank one its the one IMO
deju 1,889 Posted December 30, 2014 I like the tank the red star goes with the bezel... But the other dial looks more vintage and seeing it in the case, something about the way the light seems to hit it at certain angles. Hard choice both are good but tank just that bit more
HeavyKrush 16 Posted December 30, 2014 Wish the plain one had a splash of color like the red star but I think the tank looks a little juvenile. Would like to see it with the hands as I think it could really fill out the plain dial. Plain dial would be my choice for now. Regardless, it looks like a fantastic build! wqleow 1 Posted December 30, 2014 I much prefer a watch with some history / story to it. I'm leaning towards the plain dial. HeavyKrush is right, the hands will fill up the plain dial and make it look better. Any pics of the hands?
GenTLe 1,510 Posted December 30, 2014 Ok, let's do this way: since, as also BigBuys said, the strap fits much more with the tank one (I bought it before the donor watch) I will probably recase the tank dial. But I will also fix the other one and mount the hands in it. To keep it in a good shape as spare, or to sell it and get back the money I spent to fix the other one Thanks to all
Adezo 0 Posted December 30, 2014 Tank. Looks good with the red details.

This way we will both have a functional watch and I will not feel an opportunist.
HeavyKrush 16 Posted December 30, 2014 G, just started researching these. Friggin' great prices for a vintage piece. What size is the case not including crown on yours?
Bidle 0 Posted December 30, 2014 Again the tank-dial, but only because the other one is rather 'flat'. The tank-dial does better justice in combination with the case. Also I would just put it on a plain (one colour) strap, just to give it more balance. Just my 2ct.
GenTLe 1,510 Posted December 30, 2014 G, just started researching these. Friggin' great prices for a vintage piece. What size is the case not including crown on yours? Lugs to lugs are 44+mm Bezel is 40mm Case comprehending CG is 42.5mm Movement is I think 19kBPH handwind with no hack second and no quick date set. And case is plated brass with plexy.
