Watchbox DIY

Recommended Posts

Made this over the last week or so. Solid zebrawood frame. Velveteen lined. Velveteen pillows. Room for fifteen pieces and straps in the back.

Haven't done the lid yet. I'm torn between continuing the zebra across a solid top or going with zebra frame and glass. If I did a solid top, I'd go with a veneer and do a nice angled "V" pattern mirrored grain right up the centre. If I go for a glass display top, do I bring the wood frame out on the back to cover the straps? Dunno...

Thoughts?

I really like DIY

Well done

As for the lid, I personally follow my rule #3

Solid top - married RWG members

Glass top - single or divorced RWG members

Thanks Kal. So you'd go with Glass but cover the straps.

I like it, did you add glass? Id actually buy one...just what im looking for. I have found similar ones but for 24 or 27 watches. I want about a 15-20 watch box with glass...if anyone has recommendations.

Nice job, the miters look smart.

Personally I would have gone for a darker, less grainy wood.

but Ive got to get some watches to put in it first.....

Great collection. Well done

Thanks! Zebra is up there on the hardness scale, so it's pretty unforgiving with your miters. If I do another one, I'll do it with something easier to machine and just veneer the whole thing. I used zebra because every watch-box I see seems to be "darker, less grainy wood" which IMO is

The worst part of this project was making the dividers. Period... Glue fumes and tedium...

Looks great and I love the grain of the wood. I'd be leaning towards a timber lid personally. Good job.

The reason I say timber lid is that I think if you had a glass lid, with the straps covered, I think it would look a bit dicky being that the glass would not be centred.

Box looks great DMP. Zebrawood is a great tonewood as well. Looks great. I'd say go glass top. Unless you are getting a veneer from the same batch of wood, you're grain patterns and colors might be off, and that would just away from it. Also, veneer isn't the strongest of materials...

Enjoy!

Thanks! I have loads of veneer from the same batch. Not too worried about that.

Splendid workmanship. As you said, glass all the way (covering the straps). A lot of the pleasure is being able to see the watches.

Alternate: removable square wood cut out that drops over the glass. You get 2 choices that way.

That looks great man! What do ya think all the materials ran you altogether? More or less expensive than buying one? Obviously you have more freedom when making it yourself! Congrats though anyway!
