mbjoer 0 Posted May 19, 2010 Amongst the more unusual of the reps available at the moment is the DeWitt Academia 1940 Chronometer. I have never seen any references to it here and as a gen only 50 were made. The rarerity of the watch also means that there are very few images of the Gen. This makes it somewhat hard to compare the rep to the original, but frankly it really doesn't matter as the chance of being confronted with one is virtually nil. But on 10 May 2010 Christie's Geneva sold one, and in the process provided a picture on the web of the Gen. So I thought I would provide a small comparison and comment on mine using the scant information I have on the Gen. Not a million dollar watch but in the context of this particular auction a rather affordable one at Sfr 6,250. The Gen: Christie's descripe the watch as follows: A large 18K white gold limited edition chronograph wristwatch with two-tone silvered dial Signed DeWitt, Genève, Limited Edition, No. 07/50, case no. NE 071.48, circa 2006 Nickel-finished lever movement, 15 jewels, silvered brushed dial with engine-turned centre, Arabic numerals, skeletonized hands, central black chronograph seconds hand, two engine-turned subsidiary dials for constant seconds and 30 minutes register, oversized circular case, "Imperial Column" decorated band, milled bezel, glazed display back secured by six screws, large 18K white gold DeWitt buckle, case, dial and movement signed. 43 mm. diam. The Rep: I will not enter into a detailed comparison with the Gen. I have never seen one, the picture here is not particularly clear and anyhow it really doesn't matter with such a rare watch. The main thing to me is how the watch looks on its own. With an almost totally unknown small band like DeWitt there is no brand recognition to fall back on and the watch will have to speak for itself. If you like it, great. If not, move on! So straight on to the pictures:
