Do I need a watch winder?

Recommended Posts

Mr. Genesis

Hi,

I'm trying to know if it's bad or not when an automatic watch stops, but I can't find a clear answer on the net. Can someone tell me if it's bad or not and why?

Thank you

dont think you will get a decent answer and which side of the fence you sit on, some say having a watch winder wears down the parts, others say it keeps it lubricated.

practically if you have a mega complication watch, a watch winder will save you setting it if you done wear it much.

Ah ok, because it's not a problem for me to set the time and hour. I was just wondering if the fact that my watches stops sometimes could be bad for them. :P

Thank you

Nope, IMO watch winders are unnecessary.

I've lived a fairly comfortable life for @72 years so far without one...And I have owned "a few"(maybe 4-500 !!) watches over that span...Just set it and wear it...Then put it back in the box till the next time you need to use it...Why complicate life...???

I have been contemplating this very question since diving into the auto watch game but have decided against it for the reasons posted by Mr. Frank (respect your elders). My only concern is resetting every few weeks because I am scared I am going to do something to the crown threads or something. But so far, so good.

Do you have an Asian clone based GMT watch? Does your watch have a finicky or tough to screw/set crown? Do you hate setting the date (more than once a month)?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, consider a winder.

You, sir, are almost on my ignore list. How dare you post such a small pic of beautiful women in bikinis? And when I click on it, the pic is no bigger than the one in the original post?

I've already contacted a mod. Either start posting larger pictures of women in bikinis or enjoy your time in the gulag. Also, please forward any original pics for approval before posting on the open board.

:P

With gens, I think unnecessary. With reps, I think the opposite is true.

I'm with SSTEEL on this one, plus, keep them in some kind of rotation, that way they all get worn and topped up nicely.

I wear at least 2 every day, more at weekends.

Heres my take. Every 3rd day. When you wake, go and give all your watches a swirl and a small and slow wind. Then go about your regular morning routine. Thats what i do.

Those bikini clad watch winders are the best but what do you have to feed them to ensure reliability and sustained action? Do they actually last the night and nobody has even mentioned the importance of lubrication in this topic!!

Depends on what type of meat you feed 'em. I heard wiener dogs keep them going.
