This is a huge DSSD comparison between Noob, BP, the Best Mods, and the Best Franken Parts you can get. WARNING! This is a pic heavy post, and may cost you a lot of money when you start going down this crazy rabbit hole. Don't say I didn't prepare you… :-)

 

I have always loved this watch. I have enjoyed a solid BK DSSD (which is a Noob with a gen ETA, BK's Date wheel and careful inspection/QC). I have also been keen on PBDad's awesome mods to the BK DSSD, and have grown more and more fond of BP's latest ultimate DSSD. As many of you know, I went crazy and grabbed a genuine DSSD bezel assembly on eBay. PBDad, who had done a couple other successful install mods of the gen assembly was enlisted and we went all out...

 

This comparo will reveal some insights on going for the best and most gen like DSSD you can get. Again, you have been warned…

 

Use Date to determine model…

"1" = "Gen" DSSD; "30" = "Super Rep BK" DSSD; "28" = BP ULTIMATE

 

 

 

 

 

 

On to The Lineup

 

1) "Gen" DSSD (With "1" in Date Window)

- BK DSSD (Noob with ETA)

- PBDad Superlume

- Satin Dial

- OGEV/RLS Text Mod

- HEV Sealed

- Brushed Bracelet

- Gen DSSD Bezel (full assembly)

 

 

 

 

 

2) "Super Rep" BK/PB DSSD (With "30" in Date Window)

- BK DSSD (Noob with ETA)

- PBDad Superlume

- Satin Dial

- OGEV/RLS Text Mod

- HEV Sealed

- Brushed Bracelet

SHOWDOWN

TRIPLE "F" (Fit, Finish, Feel)

- Noob just "feels" the most solid

- BP wins in construction (more gen like)

- BP, however just feels less solid, but not by much

 

BEZEL (Noob vs. BP vs. WSO/Aftermarket)

- BP Pearl is AWESOME

- Noob Pearl SUCKS!

- Noob Triangle Sucks! (Rounded top)

- BP Triangle is great

- WSO Pearl is better than Noob but not as good as BP

- WSO Triangle - tied with BP

- WSO with BP Pearl is best combo of Rep Inserts

- Black Ceramic - Noob, BP, WSO - Draw

- Insert Engravings - WSO wins! Deeper Engravings

- Color of Engravings - Draw. They could all use Plat Mod

- CLICKS… BP out of box is tighter (on mine anyway) than Noob

- Noob uses click spring wire and BP uses more gen like Bearing Springs

 

CRYSTAL (NOOB vs. BP)

- Noob Wins Hands Down

- BP is a lot cloudier

- Either Way… AR is STRONGLY Advised, so it doesn't really matter…

- Height - Draw. Both very gen like.

 

CASESET

- Noob Dial/Hands are slightly better (mainly because of slightly better index surrounds)

- BP Case is slightly nicer than Noob (only because of better gen like construction)

- "K" from "Ring Lock" Lined up great on Both Noob and BP

- Datewheel is centered on BP (And on Noob because of BK DWO)

- Rehaut Lined up centered on Noob and BP

 

BRACELET (NOOB vs. BP)

- Noob HANDS DOWN!!!

- BP Bracelet has clasp issues. Otherwise good.

 

OUT OF BOX LUME

- BP Wins without a doubt! Color and Charge are awesome!

- Noob Lume color is off and sucks!

- Either way, adding lume is advised, but can live without on BP

 

BEST DSSD?

 

$350-500… can get you 92% there…

1) Get a Noob

2) Get a BP Insert ($30)

3) Platinum Paint Mod

4) Relume

5) Done… But budget for AR Later :-)

 

$600-800 Budget… can get you 95% there

1)Get a BP Ultimate with Gen ETA

2) Get it Superlumed

3) Get a Plat Paint Mod on Bezel Insert

4) Get AR (single or double) on Crystal

5) Swap Bracelet for Noob

6) Get HEV Sealed for Max WR

7) Enjoy! :-)

 

Money's (Almost) No Object… can get you 98% there

1) Take A BK (Noob)

2) Source a Gen Bezel (or WSO Insert with Plat Mod and BP Pearl)

3) Get it worked up with Re-Lume

4) AR the Crystal

5) Get Bracelet Brushed

6) Seal up HEV - WR

7) OGEV/RLS Text Mod (Satin Dial Mod Optional)

8) Enjoy! And If you found a gen dial great, but you will still be 98% there! ;-)

 

FINAL SUMMARY

- BP overall does not get as much credit as it truly deserves. While I do think Noob is (very slightly) better, it requires more mods out of the box.

 

- Why any love for Noob. It is hard to pinpoint but when you wear both, the noob just "feels" more gen like.

 

- BP is still AWESOME! If you want to get a great DSSD with minimal modding, get the BP and enjoy!

 

- If you intend on going crazy, get a good modder you trust and stay on top of it.

Having owned numerous of both noob and BP DSSDs I think all in all the noob is far superior. The worst thing on the BP is the awful crystal. On the first BP I bought soon after they were launched there was dust in the glass making it cloudy. In addition the crystal is more domed which causes unpleasant distortion. Indeed its the main thing that screams rep. I bought another BP recently in the hope that this had been improved but it hasn't, its still awful.

 

I personally think the pearl is over rated. Whilst a bit more gen like it sits way too high and doesn't look right. I much prefer the Kenny modded pearl on my noob DSSDs. The triangle on the BP is wrong too as rather than being straight across the top, on mine at least, it dipped down towards the pearl.

 

The crown on the BP is too short, which looks odd in my view.

 

As the OP stated the bracelet on the BP is inferior in quality to the noob, particularly the clasp, which is awful.

 

All in all the BP version of the DSSD is vastly over rated and doesn't live up to all the hype.

 

Can't understand why anyone would want to AR coat the crystal. I love the crystal like effect you get when you move the watch due to the domed surface, which is just like the gen, at last on the noob version is.

I'm under the impression the bits are all better (eg lume) but the overall fit and finish falls to spotty QC at times. The BK still looks to be the most "solid" rep but of course not the most accurate.
