Has anyone ever been turned down at an AD?

Recommended Posts

I'm curious, because I know that we have many different members here who span a wide range of types. Has anyone ver been denied entrance to an AD or high end watch shop? I ask because I was. Now I know for a fact it was because I have dreadlocks that I was refused, BUTI do dress very nice (most days leather shoes and button ups with a jacket) and I have very good hygiene and carry myself with confidence. I have browsed AD's in Melbourne, Vegas, Bangkok, Dubai, NYC, D.C., SF, Prague, and countless other less notable cities and even here in Amsterdam where I live. But this morning I was wasting time on Dam Square and decided to stop in for a moment at Gassan which is a dealer of many brands(mostly Rolex and Omega but lots more scattered throughout. I've been in there many times and never had a problem. Today I happened to be dressed a bit more casually (nikes and jeans). Well the doorman informed me that they "were at capacity" with NO ONE in there that I could see. He gave me a quick up and down and then just shut the door and stared at me until I walked away. Needless to say I'm a bit pissed about this, so I figured I'd vent here and get some stories from you guys to make me feel a bit better about myself haha. So, tell me your tales of being kicked out or turned away.

Seriously though if they are going to be dicks I wouldn't go back there, or if you do go dressed up and ask to speak to the manager, if you have a nice newish watch show it him and tell him you were going to buy it from them but the doorman was a dick and turned you away so you bought it online

We'll you shouldn't have dreadlocks :giggle:

Not a story about an AD but a friend of mine got turned down at a car dealer for a testdrive because of how he was dressed that day.

After he got his new BMW he bought at the competitor he stopped by the dealer that refused him to ask if they could replace his light bulb :P

Priceless ;-)

Honestly I was about to spew some words to the doorman but he shut the door on me while I was standing there dumbfounded. I wasn't planning to buy anything right then but that's beside the point. I was going to look around at the omega counter because I'm getting one for christmas and wanted to ask them about straps and servicing. But they have definitely soured me now. I wish there was a Yelp for watch stores haha

If I would have been drunk as I normally am on a Friday I would have had some witty line to throw in his face but alas I was sober so had nothing :(

This is exactly what I should do haha ... go in with my Speedie come xmas time and ask them to change a screw for me ... and then casually mention I got it down the road at the shop with the nice gentleman watching the door

That's funny because my pa-in-law is a partner at one of the biggest law firms and he always gets my opinion on watches haha so I like to pretend that my influence gets around certain circles :giggle:

As for ADs, no, I've never been refused entry. The one you mention on Dam Square must be pretentious pricks - you can never be certain from someone's attire if they are a genuine buyer or not.

I remember sitting in Cafe de Paris in Monaco watching cars drive through Casino Square (I was on holiday btw!), some of which would stop outside the casino to be valet parked. Some really nice cars like Ferraris and Lambos got the royal treatment and were parked right outside the Casino, others were taken away somewhere else to be parked and others (still really nice cars but perhaps more ordinary from a Casino Square perspective) were waved on vigorously. Then a rather sorry looking Fiat Panda turned up and I thought "this is gonna be good".......but.....he stopped right outside the Casino, got out, walked up the steps to the entrance and shook hands with all of the security staff and valet parkers before going into the Casino - and his car was taken away for parking! Clearly, this guy was well known and had significant "standing" in the Casino! I was dumbfounded. :D

Not in an AD (I don't go there), but so many fucking times at so called "trendy discos"... Doesn't matter the dress: if you arrive there with 1+ girls (and pretty) then you can go in. Otherwise... Fuck them, luckily I'm grown up enough not to have to go (because all friends were going) in such idiotic places!

By the way, next time come there with the most beautiful and expensive rep of one of the brands they have and tell them you got it elsewhere.

That's just bad manner from the dealer. I worked at a high-end car dealer and learned there that you can never judge people on their clothes. I once sold a Ferrari 360 to a guy in dirty overalls.... Even if you weren't going to buy, they miss you as a potential customer in the future and you aren't probably going to recommend people to that dealer.

so he turned away a sloppily dressed person who wasn't going to buy anything and who's a member of a replica watch forum...

...Sounds to me like he did his job. :hide:

Absolutely not ... what really gets ynder me is that I've been in there a few times before and never had a problem ... maybe today I just looked too rough from all the late night exercise ;)

I was by no means sloppily dressed ... I was wearing nice jeans and white nikes with a black polo and a black coat ... and as I said I wasn't intent on buying but asking about their servicing and straps ... and he doesn't know what filthy debaucherous embarrassing websites I frequent ... I know you're taking the piss but my god don't hit me where it hurts haha

Quite. That kind of treatment is inexcusable and the exact opposite of most high end ADs I have been in. I find they are smart enough to that regardless of how you dress you could still be a customer. One day the ass will do that to someone who has spent a fortune there previously and with any luck they will make something of it.

I've only ever been denied entrance somewher once ... at the Crowne casino in Melbourne ... even though I had my members card and 1000 bucks a guard still turned me down because I was in flip flops and shorts(in January mind you) ... so I just walked on to the next entrance and got in no problem then walked right past that guy with a huge grin on my face

I would start a one man protest in front of the store. Dress real nice and carry a sign that says that the store is biased and prejudiced against funky hairstyles :) Get a megaphone and start screaming in it! Make a scene...vent your frustrations!
